Kanin is a mountain range in the western Julian Alps that is bordered by the following valleys:
- in the north of the Seebach Valley and Raccolana Valley
- in the west of the Fellatal
- in the east of the Koritnica valley
- in the south of the Socatal , the Ucceatal and the Resia valley
The highest point is the 2587 m high Große Kanin ( first ascent in 1842 by Otto Sendtner ). The group rises above a bare karst plateau. Today the border between Slovenia and Italy runs from the Predil Pass via Raibler Seekopf , Confinspitze, Prestreljenik, Großer Kanin, Kleiner Kanin, Crini Vogel, Baba and Skutnik .
For the Kaninstock the rutted and perforated plateaus with their furrows, shafts and gorges are typical. The Kaninstock is extremely arid, but there are smaller glaciers . In foggy conditions, orientation on the plateau is very difficult.
Starting points for tours are in the north of the Neveasattel (cable car to the Gilbertihütte) and in the south Bovec (Flitsch) as well as the places of the Resia valley.
