The canton of Uyuni is a municipality in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The Cantón Uyuni is one of five cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Uyuni in the province of Antonio Quijarro . It borders in the north on the canton of Chacala , in the west and southwest on the province of Nor Lípez , in the south on the province of Sur Chichas , in the southeast on the province of Nor Chichas , and in the east on the municipality Tomave , the canton Pulacayo and the canton Huanchaca .

The canton extends between approximately 20 ° 12 'and 20 ° 59' south latitude and 66 ° 12 'and 67 ° 00' west longitude. It measures up to 75 kilometers from north to south and up to 65 kilometers from west to east. In the northern part of the canton is the central place of the canton, the city of Uyuni with 10,551 inhabitants ( 2001 ). The mean altitude of the canton is 3800  m .

The canton of Uyuni is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano between the Salar de Uyuni salt lake and the Cordillera Azanaques , which is part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate is a typical time of day climate in which the daily temperature fluctuations are greater than the fluctuations between the seasons.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C (see Uyuni climate diagram) and fluctuates between 4 and 5 ° C in June and July and 11 to 12 ° C in the summer months from November to March. The annual precipitation is just under 150 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to November with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, with a maximum of 45 mm in January.
