The Kantonsschule Uetikon am See is a public high school in the Canton of Zurich (ZH) in the municipality of Uetikon am See . The school is under construction in 2019 and opened in August 2018 with two classes each from the long and short high school with 111 students.

General

history

Up to now, children from the Meilen district have attended high school in the city of Zurich and occasionally in Wetzikon . In order to relieve the one-sided commuter flows into the city, locations for a canton school in the upper district of Meilen were sought. Beugen ( Meilen ), the Uetikon chemical factory and the Seidenhof in Stäfa were shortlisted . On September 19, 2016, the Cantonal Council approved the Uetikon am See Cantonal School. The laying of the foundation stone for the temporary solution on the Riedstegwiese took place on November 13, 2017. After school building A was fully erected on March 9, 2018, the entrance exams took place in the neighboring village school three days later. The school started operations on August 20, 2018.

Construction and location

A part of the former Uetikon chemical factory directly on Lake Zurich is planned to be the location of the canton school. For this purpose, new buildings and converted listed factory halls are to serve as school buildings. Until the new building on the lake can be occupied in ten to twelve years, the school will be housed in a makeshift facility on the Riedstegwiese in the center of Uetikon.

The two temporary school buildings made up of modules offer space for up to 500 students in around 30 rooms on three floors. The temporary arrangement comprises 20 normal classrooms, ten specialist rooms, an instrumental room, a media library , a lounge, a student work room and rooms for the school administration.

The Uetikon am See canton school offers both the long high school with a duration of 6 years and the short high school with a duration of four years, both of which end with the federally recognized Matura, which entitles them to study at any university in Switzerland. Entry takes place via the Central Entrance Examination of the Canton of Zurich (ZAP). In the first phase, the new language, mathematical-scientific and economic-legal profile are taught. The old-language profile will be added from the third year.

Modern language profile

The profile encompasses four modern languages, mathematics, the natural sciences, the social sciences and humanities, and the arts. The main subject in this profile is always one language. At the Cantonal School Uetikon am See this is English, Italian or Spanish.

Mathematical and scientific profile

The profile places the emphasis on the mathematics and natural sciences field of study. The program comprises three modern languages, a slightly higher number of hours in mathematics and the natural science subjects, the social sciences and humanities subjects, and arts subjects.

In the mathematics and science sector, a combination of two subjects forms the so-called focus subject. The main subject at the Uetikon am See Cantonal School is either “Biology and Chemistry” or “Physics and Applications of Mathematics”.

Economic and legal profile

The profile places an emphasis on the economic and legal area. The Matura program comprises three modern languages, mathematics, economics and law, the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and an arts subject. The main subject is “Economics and Law”.
