The Kapengraben is a brook in the Düben Heath .

It arises near Oranienbaum from the confluence of the millrace coming from Gräfenhainichen and Schrotemühlenbachs coming from Selbitz . The stream gets its name from the former forest area Kapen west of Oranienbaum. The entire brook system around the Kapengraben drains these parts of the heather via the Mulde and Elbe into the North Sea .

Most of the catchment area of the Kapengraben is in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . The central administrative seat of the biosphere reserve is the little Kapenschlösschen located directly on the Kapengraben between Dessau and Oranienbaum . The information center is located at the entrance from Bundesstraße 107 .

At Vockerode , the Kapengraben passes under the A 9 , a barrage and a pumping station directly on the motorway protect the hinterland from the floods of the Mulde and Elbe.

Between Dessau and Roßlau it flows into the Mulde, which in turn flows into the Elbe just a few hundred meters further.

The expansion of Kapengrabens and the reclamation of former morass - and swamps at the beginning of the 18th century allow the agricultural use of these areas and, consequently, the construction of places Kakau and Horstdorf .

In the past, a large number of watermills (including Kapenmühle, Kakauer Mühle, Brückmühle, Müchauer Mühle, Gartenmühle, Hainmühle, Vehsenmühle, Pirnbaummühle, Buchholzmühle, Fahringsmühle, Breitewitzer Mühle) were powered. In some cases, reservoirs were created for this purpose. The stone pit mill fell victim to the Golpa-Nord opencast mine and the Teichdamm mill fell to the Gröbern open-cast mine .

In some parts the Kapengraben is also used as a fishing water (GW 8-183-13).
