Karen Steele (born March 20, 1931 in Honolulu , Hawaii , † March 12, 1988 in Kingman , Arizona ) was an American actress .

Life

Karen Steele was born in Honolulu to Percy Davis Steele and Ruth Covey Merritt. Her father was from Boston , of English descent, and was later named Assistant Administrator of the Marshall Islands in his capacity as an officer in the Marines . Her mother was from California and was of Danish and French descent. Karen Steele learned the Japanese and Polynesian languages ​​while growing up in Hawaii. She later studied at the University of Hawaii and acting for a year at Rollins College in Florida . At times Steele earned her living as a shark hunter on the bay of Barbara Hutton's estate .

After Steele first appeared in film and television productions from 1953, she soon played major supporting roles and was occasionally seen in leading roles. She played in films such as Marty , Ticket to the Hereafter and Happy Ending for a Marriage , as well as in isolated episodes of television series such as Bonanza , Spaceship Enterprise and A Cage Full of Heroes . As she got older, she was seen less often in movies and more on television, and she also turned more commercials. By 1970 she had over 75 different film and television productions. In the early 1970s, she turned down a series appearance for a payment of $ 78,000 because she was on a tour in a representative capacity in several hospitals in the South Pacific. She lost her Hollywood agent and her acting career was practically over.

After her acting career, Steele moved to Golden Valley , Arizona. She married Dr. Maurice Boyd Ruland, a psychiatrist at the Mohave Mental Health Clinic . The marriage lasted until her death on March 12, 1988. At the age of 56, she died of complications from cancer.
