Karim Ziad (* 1966 in Algeria ) is a jazz and world music - drummer . As a multi-instrumentalist, in addition to various percussion instruments, he also plays guitar , gumbri ( Moroccan bass lute) and sings.

Life

Karim Ziad belongs to the Berbers and grew up in Algiers . At the age of 20 he emigrated to Paris , where he quickly made contact with the local world and fusion music scene . There he worked with artists such as Cheb Mami and Nguyên Lê , through which he became known. In the late 1990s he was hired by Joe Zawinul for his project "The Zawinul Syndicate". Karim Ziad also played with the WDR big band ( Jazz al 'Arab ).

Style and musical influences

Ziad combines traditional rhythms from North Africa and the Maghreb with European and American sounds. He is not fixated on jazz, but is also involved in cross-genre projects. As influences he mentions, among other things, Chaâbi (Algerian folk music), the Gnawa traditions (in 2015 he worked with Mahmoud Guinea ), Bedouin songs , Raï as well as Egyptian film music and French chansons .
