Karl-Heinz Schulmeister (born May 6, 1925 in Bützow ; † July 17, 2017 in Bad Saarow ) was a German politician . For many years he was the first Federal Secretary of the Kulturbund der GDR and represented it as parliamentary group chairman and member of the Presidium for decades in the People's Chamber of the GDR .

Life

Karl-Heinz Schulmeister was born as the third son of a teacher in Bützow, Mecklenburg . He attended elementary and high school and passed the Abitur. From 1942 to 1945 he did military service as an air officer in the Wehrmacht .

In 1946 Schulmeister became a member of the SED and a member of the newly founded Kulturbund, for which he worked from 1946 to 1948, initially as local secretary and later as district secretary in the Schwerin district . At the same time he worked until 1948 as a consultant in the information department of the state government of Mecklenburg. He then headed the Mecklenburg State Association of the Kulturbund until 1952. From 1950 until the dissolution of the state parliament in June 1952, he represented the Kulturbund as a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . With the establishment of districts, Schulmeister moved to the Rostock district , where he headed the Kulturbund as district secretary until 1954. At the same time he was a member of the Rostock district assembly .

1954 to 1955 he completed a course at the central school of the Central Committee of the SED in Erfurt. In 1955 he was appointed Federal Secretary of the Kulturbund, and in May 1957 he was appointed 1st Federal Secretary (successor to Karl Kneschke ). With the beginning of the 3rd electoral term of the Volkskammer in 1958 he became a member of the Kulturbund and remained that way for seven electoral terms until March 1990. In the period from 1959 to 1965, Schulmeister completed a distance learning course at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he also completed the title of graduate historian. After the death of Erich Wendt in 1965, he took over the parliamentary group chairmanship of the Kulturbund in the Volkskammer. In 1969 Schulmeister moved up to the Presidium of the People's Chamber through an expansion. Schulmeister became a Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold and in 1985 the Bar of Honor for the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold. In 1982 Schulmeister was appointed professor at Humboldt University. In 1986 he was elected 1st Vice President of the Kulturbund.

Schulmeister survived the political turnaround in autumn 1989 relatively unscathed. When examining Stalinist management methods in the Kulturbund , no evidence was found for the misconduct alleged to be committed. As one of only three members of the old People's Chamber Presidium, he was also elected to the new Presidium on November 13, 1989. In 1990 Schulmeister retired, initially living in Eichwalde near Berlin and from 2014 in a senior citizens' home in Bad Saarow.

Schoolmaster died at the age of 92 in Bad Saarow.
