Life

Karl-Heinz Strehlke was born in Seelze during the Weimar Republic in 1924, where he attended secondary school and then advanced school in Wunstorf . As a teenager, he moved to Garbsen on January 2, 1937, at the time of National Socialism , where he initially lived on Kampweg, and from 1962 on Pottbergsweg.

After graduating from high school in Garbsen, Strehlke initially worked as a soldier in the German Navy before studying education. After initially working as a teacher in Havelse and Stöcken , in December 1965 he took over the position of rector of the Saturnring elementary school in Garbsen , which was already a social hotspot in the mid-1960s due to the highest proportion of foreigners in the Garbsen elementary schools at 33.7 percent. But the teacher and school principal knew how to put Pestalozzi's pedagogical claim "education with head, heart and hand" into practice: When Strehlke, who was respected by students, parents and colleagues, retired in February 1987 after 22 years of service, one of his students wrote to him in a letter: "Dear Mr. Strehlke, I wish that you were my father."

Decades earlier had Karl-Heinz Strehlke in the Social Democratic Party is committed (SPD) and was in on 26 October 1964 the Council voted Garbsen the community. There he was a member of the administrative and cultural committee. The experiments of Hannover , Garbsen as district in the capital of Lower Saxony einzugemeinden , resisted Strehlke and business instead of the merger of the municipalities Garbsen Havelse into an independent city: After from the communities Havelse and Garbsen the larger community Garbsen was formed in April 1967, This had been transferred in July 1968 the town charter, Karl-Heinz Strehlke initially took over the duties of the deputy mayor and was elected the following year on August 29, 1969 into the office of also honorary mayor.

In addition, Strehlke was active as chairman of the Garbsender local association of the German Red Cross (DRK) for almost 17 years , and also worked on the advisory board of the social and diakonia station. As a member of TuS Garbsen, he actively played football, volunteered in the local workers' welfare organization (AWO) and in the Garbsen shooting club.

On the initiative of Mayor Strehlke, who is still the rector of the Saturnring elementary school, IGS Garbsen , which opened in 1971, was the first attempt at an integrated comprehensive school in Lower Saxony . Strehlke worked in the planning management for the IGS and sometimes accompanied the school experiment with public criticism.

When there was not enough classroom available in the then Auf der Horst new building area , Strehlke committed himself with great personal commitment in the first few years to overcoming the school space deficits during the first few years without the pupils having to suffer as a result: after Mayor Strehlke together Having signed a two-digit million order with city director Jan Höötmann for the construction of IGS Garbsen without the city having already designated a plot of land for this purpose, the Garbsen secondary school, the Johannes Kepler grammar school and the special school Im Kleegrund were soon built. In 1972 the indoor swimming pool and the planet ring leisure center followed, and in 1973 the Garbsen shopping center was established.

During Strehlke's tenure as mayor, the local authority's building land program enabled the young family to purchase land in Garbsen at a reasonable price. The laying of the foundation stone of the Eurobau model house development , which was carried out with Karl-Heinz Strehlke and received media attention throughout Germany and Europe, began in 1981 at the same time as the development of Garbsen-Mitte for residential development.

Karl-Heinz Strehlke acted as mayor for more than 12 years until November 10, 1981, then took over the office of deputy mayor again during a further electoral term until he resigned from active council work on November 4, 1986 after more than two decades. Nevertheless, he remained "a sought-after advisor as an expert on the city."

In addition to creating a functional infrastructure , Strehlke sought and maintained contact with the citizens of Garbsen, as mayor at representative events, in the Garbsen shooting club or, for example, at carnival celebrations in the multi-purpose hall Berenbostel, during which he gave humorous hand-made speeches.

In September 1984 Karl-Heinz Strehlke was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his many years of voluntary work in local politics as well as his diverse voluntary work in local clubs and associations .

Strehlke was also a co-founder and member of the local Heimatverein. He was a co-founder of the Garbsen Museum Association and was involved in setting up the local history museum on Hannoversche Strasse, where he often led guided tours for school and adult groups. In the 1990s he published several times in the series on the city history of the Garbsen city archive, for example about his own school days during the Third Reich , and also contributed to two local chronicles.

In 2005 Karl-Heinz Strehlke was honored for his outstanding cultural commitment by being awarded the City of Garbsen's Culture Prize.

In 2008, Strehlke was the first citizen of the city of Garbsen to be granted honorary citizenship.
