On the Horst is the most densely populated district of Garbsen in the Hanover region . The settlement around the ring roads “Planet Ring” and “Saturn Ring” is characteristic of the district. In the mid-1960s, the district was built with three-story flat-roof multi-family houses, flat-roof bungalows and two-story flat-roof single-family houses. Wide streets and generously sized green areas were laid out.

history

The current Garbsen district was uninhabited until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1900 a mill with a house was moved from Marienwerder to what is now the Bärenhof street . It was demolished in 1966. The only industry was the hard stone works in Hanover (today's position next to the “Planet Center” shopping center, “Eichenpark” building area) and a car repair shop that still exists today.

Since Hanover was badly damaged in the Second World War and there was a shortage of housing there, as everywhere, it was decided to build on land at the gates of Hanover. The municipal real estate company Union Boden acquired a good 80 hectares of land through purchase or exchange, of which around 90 percent was in the area of the then independent municipalities of Garbsen and Havelse. The city planning office of the state capital Hanover planned a large housing estate for 10,000 people for this area. The intermunicipal contract required for this between Hanover, the municipalities of Garbsen and Havelse and the district of Neustadt am Rübenberge was negotiated in the summer of 1963 and signed in March 1964.

Leveling work began in May 1963 and the first roads were laid. The foundation stone was laid in March 1964, and the first residents moved in as early as December 1964. The rows of houses in the three-story apartment buildings were each built within six months. This was possible because the prefabricated construction method was used for the first time in Lower Saxony: field factories were set up near the construction area in which the precast concrete parts were manufactured. Three construction companies built a total of 1714 apartments in three-story apartment buildings and 443 single-family houses, ie one-story bungalows and two-story terraced houses, all with flat roofs.

The settlement was built under the leadership and at the expense of the state capital. The infrastructure buildings such as day-care centers and schools, sports facilities and care facilities passed into the ownership of the municipality on whose territory they were located. The municipalities of Garbsen and Havelse subsequently bore the ongoing maintenance costs. With the Auf der Horst settlement, the communities had grown together spatially and they had to coordinate matters in this area with one another, such as the occupancy of kindergartens and schools. In 1966, the municipalities of Garbsen and Havelse signed the contract with which they joined forces on January 1, 1967 to form a unified municipality. This means that the Auf der Horst settlement built by the city of Hanover can be seen as the impetus for the later development into today's city of Garbsen.

Beginning in the 1990s, the district gained the reputation of a social hotspot. The district had a relatively high unemployment rate and crime rate for the time. As a result of renovations by the public sector and apartment owners, the Garbsen district has been turning back into an attractive residential area since the 2010s. The district is undisputedly a multicultural residential area with a high proportion of fellow citizens who have southern and international roots. With the mechanical engineering campus of the University of Hanover in neighboring Garbsen-Mitte, which opened in autumn 2019, students can also find their way to the district.

The Planet Center, which opened on May 7, 1973, was once the first covered shopping center in the wide area, was demolished in 2013 and replaced on May 20, 2015 by a more modern, larger shopping center at the same location. An existing indoor swimming pool in the neighborhood was renovated in 2006. In addition, an application resulted in the core area of the district being included in the urban development program “ The Social City ” in 2006.

Blazon : "In blue under a shield head split four times by red and gold , including a golden ring planet ( Saturn )."
Justification for the coat of arms: The upper part of the shield (red: gold) is based on the coat of arms of the city of Garbsen, which was based on the tinging of the former royal Hanoverian office of Ricklingen . The golden ring planet in blue symbolizes the settlement in the district within the ring road. The street in question is popularly known as the “planetary ring”.
