history

Before the founding of Osterwald in the 13th century by Nienburg monks, the area around the "Osterwald" was a large moorland that was drained. The district has historically emerged as a Hagensiedlung along the main street. The narrow but very deep strips of land connected to the main road ( Hagenhufendorf ), mainly with fields and pastures, can still be seen today. There are still a number of farms that, in addition to two to three-story apartment buildings and single-family houses, shape the image of Osterwald. In addition to the agricultural businesses, many commercial businesses have settled here in recent years.

The long-time manager of FC Bayern Munich , Uli Hoeneß , survived a plane crash on February 17, 1982 near Osterwald.

coat of arms

The design of the coat of arms of Osterwald comes from the heraldist and author Werner Kaemling , who also designed the coat of arms of Blumenau , Empelde , Wedemark and many other places in the district of Hanover.

  • The approval of the coat of arms was granted by the district president in Hanover on May 11, 1964.
  • The Osterwald district, which was newly formed by law on March 1, 1974, adopted the coat of arms of the previous municipality of Osterwald, Unterende, which was approved by the district president in Hanover.
Coat of arms of Osterwald
Blazon : "In red under a golden shield head , inside an oak branch with four green leaves and two green acorns , a silver paddock wholeadsa silver horse by the reinswith his right handand a silver knotted stick in his left."
Justification for the coat of arms: The green branch in gold indicates that the first mention of the place is attested in 1247 and is expressly referred to as "Hagendorf". The residents differed greatly from those of the neighboring villages in terms of their rights, and in some cases also of their employment. They were personally free, in contrast to the independent farmers in the area. The place was freed from the Gogericht (wooden court Engelbostel), which had existed since 1248, in 1590. The symbol of the oak branch (the old groves around the place had almost exclusively oak trees) therefore appears as a symbol for the Hagendorf, the court situation, personal freedom and property, not least to be the most appropriate for the place name. The silver paddock with the horse on a red background symbolizes that in the wider area, earlier also far beyond the borders of Lower Saxony, the Osterwalder were known as “paddock”. They brought the horses to so-called paddocks on behalf of Hanoverian traders, for example from Belgium to East Prussia, from East Friesland to Saxony, etc. These historical facts formed the basis for the design of the coat of arms.
