Origin and family

Career and zoological research

Karl August Ramdohr concluded an already begun in 1794, study of natural sciences at the University of Halle and was probably with a dissertation on a medical topic for Dr. phil. PhD. From 1803 to 1808 he was a private lecturer at the universities of Wittenberg and Halle . There he published his microscopic studies on entomology and helminthology as well as findings on the reproduction and development of the hippopotamus Cyclops in March 1805 . Around 1807 he was in Beichlingen and researched the anatomy of the intestinal canal and the genitals of Carabus monilis . In 1808 he was also the first to describe the ostracodal species Heterocypris incongruens (RAMDOHR, 1808) and Iliocypris gibba (RAMDOHR, 1808). From 1809 to 1815 he was also the royal Prussian war commissioner in Beichlingen. In addition, Ramdohr ran a magazine beekeeping at the castle there around 1811 , like his uncle, pastor Johann Christian Ramdohr (1730–1802) once did . Soon afterwards, he also tried the more productive swarm bee breeding, in which the swarms' enthusiasm for work could be used for even higher yields. In the same year he published a treatise on the digestive tools of insects . Even Goethe mentions reading this book in his diaries on January 5, 1812. In 1814 Ramdohr also researched organs of the liver fluke fasciola .

From 1826 Ramdohr was the chief bailiff in Havelberg and in 1832 wrote a book about the basket beekeeping with swarming that he had tried out. The work published in 1833 is entitled The Most Profitable and Easiest Kind of Beekeeping and contains exact calculations of the yield. Ramdohr has also published various writings on the physiology and anatomy of bees and must have been in high esteem among his scientifically educated contemporaries, since he had several learned societies. as a member and because of his merits was also an honorary member, such as the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin .

From 1836 he worked as a councilor and remonted depot administrator in Jurgaitschen ( Insterburg district ) in East Prussia. His grave was in nearby Trempen .
