Karl Bischoff (born May 19, 1905 in Aken (Elbe) ; † November 25, 1983 in Mainz ) was a German specialist in German studies and a university professor.

Life

Born the son of a blacksmith, Karl Bischoff began studying German, history and folklore in Leipzig in 1925 after completing his primary and high school education , which he continued in Tübingen and Marburg . In 1930 he received his doctorate in Marburg with the thesis Studies on the dialect geography of the Elbe - Saale area in the Calbe and Zerbst districts under the linguist Ferdinand Wrede (1863–1934).

After passing the scientific and educational state examination, he initially worked in higher education in Halberstadt , Elbingerode , Salzwedel and Magdeburg .

Bischoff joined the SA in 1933 and the NSDAP in 1937 . He also belonged to the National Socialist teachers' association. After the war he joined the CDU .

The scientific work carried out in addition to his school activity led to his habilitation in 1943 at the University of Halle with an examination of the language of the Saxon mirror by Eike von Repgow . From then on, Karl Bischoff worked part-time as a lecturer in Halle before he was appointed professor with a teaching position in 1948 . In 1951 he was appointed to the chair for German Philology at the University of Halle. He refused a call to the University of Göttingen in 1958 because he did not want to part with Central Germany and the research that was closely related to it. However, the political development in the GDR caused Karl Bischoff to leave the second German state. "In the spring of 1959, the call to the chair for German Philology and Folklore in Mainz gave Karl Bischoff a new place of work, and him and his family a new home" (HH Krummacher). Until his retirement in 1970, Karl Bischoff worked in Mainz in his own cautious, yet effective manner , because he turned down an appointment to the University of Tübingen in 1962.

Karl Bischoff's scientific reputation is evident in his membership of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig (1955), the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (1957), the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz (1965) and the Academie voor Taalen Letterkunde in Gent (1972). As a person, Karl Bischoff was of an extraordinary and beneficial humility, as a researcher and academic teacher of impressive honesty. At times he “exposed the ethical core of his academic teaching to the audience; The university teacher kept to himself that this core arose for himself from the humility of Christian faith ”(G. Eifler).
