Karl Born (born September 2, 1943 in Konstanz ) is a German economist and manager in tourism companies . From 2000 to 2006 he taught as a professor at the Harz University of Applied Sciences in Wernigerode .

Life

Born grew up in Mannheim and completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk after finishing school. He then completed further training at the Administration and Business Academy in Mannheim as a business economist (VWA) . From January 1969 he worked for Condor Flugdienst in Frankfurt, initially in controlling and later as sales manager. On October 1, 1987, he moved to TUI in Hanover as director of air traffic . He was later appointed general representative and appointed to the company's board of directors on October 1, 1992. From November 1, 1997, he was on the TUI Group's board of directors for the Central Europe division, which includes the German-speaking countries and Poland. At the same time he was chairman of the management board of TUI Deutschland GmbH and directly responsible for the tourism division.

Numerous industry innovations that were first implemented by TUI can be traced back to Karl Born. This includes complaint management in the destination area, free travel to the airport or the "money-back guarantee".

On April 6, 2000, he resigned from the Board of Management at his own request.

From October 1, 2000 to September 30, 2006, he held a professorship for business administration and tourism management at the Harz University of Applied Sciences in Wernigerode. He was then appointed honorary professor there and continues to work in his department. In addition, he took on a teaching position at the private university of applied sciences in Göttingen .

In addition to his university activities, Karl Born appeared as a speaker at association and management meetings of various companies on all tourism topics. But Born was also often engaged with lectures on general topics outside of tourism such as customer orientation, complaint management, and crisis management outside of tourism. Born appeared as an expert on radio and TV news broadcasts. In the tourism industry he is known for Born's snappy remarks that have been published weekly on his website and as a newsletter since 2001 .

Born is a member of the supervisory board of Dorint GmbH in Cologne as well as the supervisory board of Ameropa GmbH in Bad Homburg and the supervisory board of the DSR Hotel Group, Rostock. He is a member of the “Study Group for Tourism”, Ammerland, and belongs to the “German Society for Tourism Science” (DGT). In the German Travel Association he is a member of the vocational training and advanced training committee. He is chairman of the jury for the award of the Willy Scharnow Prize and a member of the TINTKO scientific advisory board (team for international tourist communication). In addition, he is a member of the advisory board of the travel agency in Bonn. Karl Born is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Tourism Association (DTV).
