Karl Dietrich Hepp

Karl Dietrich Hepp (born September 25, 1936 in Munich ) is a German doctor .

Life

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1954, Hepp studied medicine and sports medicine at the universities of Munich and Freiburg. After the state examination, he received his doctorate in 1960 at the University of Munich with a dissertation on the treatment of severe cranio-cerebral injuries in the acute stage . In 1961/62 he completed the ECFMG exam and rotating internship at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield , New Jersey , USA. In 1962/63 he worked as a medical assistant at Munich clinics and received his license to practice medicine . From 1963 to 1965 he worked as a research assistant in clinical biochemistry at O. Wieland, University of Munich. From 1965 to 1968 he was a Senior Research Fellow and Instructor in Medicine at the Div. of Endocrinology University of Washington Medical School, Seattle, Washington, with Robert H. Williams. In 1969/70 he worked at the Institute for Clinical Chemistry, Munich-Schwabing Hospital with O. Wieland. From 1969 to 1979 he was head of the clinical-experimental department of the Institute for Diabetes Research and assistant at the 3rd Medical Department of the Munich-Schwabing Hospital with Hellmut Mehnert . In 1974 he was Visiting Physician at the Dept. of Endocrinology and Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester , Minnesota . From 1979 to 1984 he was chief physician in charge of the internal medicine department at the Academic Hospital Munich-Oberföhring. From 1984 to 2001 he was chief physician of the 3rd Medical Department for Metabolism , Endocrinology and Angiology with a Diabetes Center at the Academic Hospital Munich-Bogenhausen .

Since 2001 Hepp has been running a private practice for diabetology and endocrinology in Munich. Since 1978 he has been an adjunct professor at the LMU Munich. From 1979 to 1982 he was Honorary Secretary of the European Association for The Study of Diabetes ( EASD ) and from 1980 to 1983 Secretary of the German Diabetes Society , of which he was elected President in 1984. For the years 1991 to 2001, the city chief physicians of Munich elected him as their spokesman. Since 2004 he has been President of the German Elite Academy.

  • Significant initial observations in the field of regulatory biochemistry, particularly the mechanism of action of insulin and its hormonal counterparts. First observation of the action of insulin on cell membranes in 1971.
  • Regulation of the insulin receptor in diabetes 1975.
  • Clinical studies: Work on the development of insulin pumps in 1975, with the first miniaturized insulin pump together with Siemens AG and its successful use in unstable diabetes in 1977. First studies with implanted insulin pumps.
