Karl Eckermann
Karl Eckermann (born March 26, 1834 in Weimar , † August 29, 1891 in Göttingen ) was a German painter.
Life
He was the son of Johann Peter Eckermann and his wife Johanna Sophie Christiane Catherine Eckermann, b. Bertram, who died a few weeks after he was born. His father, who was a confidante and conversation partner of Goethe , raised him with relatives and friends. Karl Eckermann was baptized on April 6, 1834 with the name Johann Friedrich Georg - godparents were Ottilie von Goethe , Friedrich von Müller , Johann Stephan Schütze and Frédéric Jacob Soret - but only called Karl or Carl for life.
At an early age, the son showed the same talent for drawing that his father had, but had not developed due to lack of money. With an inheritance and the support of Espérance Sylvestre (1790–1842) and Maria Pawlownas , Johann Peter Eckermann financed Karl's time at the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar and his training as a painter. From 1848 Karl Eckermann learned to paint from Friedrich Preller . He went on several educational trips to Dresden and Berlin and was able to sell his pictures by 1853 at the latest. After his father died in 1854, he studied in Brussels and from 1856 in Karlsruhe with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and in Düsseldorf . In 1864 he moved to Hanover , where his mother was from.
Even after his studies, he made numerous trips, for example to Austria, the Black Forest, Basel and northern Germany. At first he mainly created animal pictures, later mainly landscapes.
In the directory of the Kunsthalle Bremen Eckermann is named as one of the painters whose paintings were shown at the 13th Great Exhibition in 1862. Several of his still lifes, which mainly showed game that had been shot, hung in Ettersburg Castle near Weimar.
Karl Eckermann was a member of the Hanover Art Association .
He died on August 29, 1891 in a mental institution in Göttingen.
