Karl Esser (botanist)

Karl Esser (born March 19, 1924 in Sinthern near Cologne ; † December 3, 2019 in Bochum ) was a German botanist and professor emeritus at the Ruhr University Bochum .

Career

Esser studied biology and biochemistry at the University of Cologne from 1946 , where he received his doctorate in 1952 . As a post-doctoral student he worked in the laboratory for genetics at the Sorbonne and from 1953 a scientific assistant at the Botanical Institute of the University of Cologne, where he qualified as a professor in 1958 . In 1959/60 he conducted research at Yale University and from 1960 he was a private lecturer at the University of Cologne. In 1963 he became a full professor of botany at the Ruhr University Bochum, where he set up and headed the Faculty of Biology and the Botanical Garden of the Ruhr University Bochum . In 1978/79 he was dean of the biology faculty there. He retired in 1989.

He dealt with plant genetics and biochemistry, especially of mushrooms .

In 1969 he was visiting professor for genetics at Indiana University in Bloomington and in 1992 visiting professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna .

From 1973 to 1989 he was chairman of the German national committee in the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

He was a Knight of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Toulouse, Orleans and Lille. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an honorary member of the German Botanical Society . In 1987 he was President of the 14th International Botanical Congress in Berlin.
