Ulf Stahl
Ulf Stahl (born January 10, 1944 in Vienna ; † August 18, 2019 in Berlin-Wedding ) was an Austrian microbiologist and geneticist . As a university lecturer at the TU Berlin (TUB), he was also the Scientific Director of the Institute for Fermentation Industry and Biotechnology in Berlin (IfGB) and advisor to the Experimental and Educational Institute for Brewing (VLB) and the Experimental and Educational Institute for Alcohol Production (VLSF).
Life
Stahl grew up in Lower Austria as the first of three children of the property manager Josef Stahl and his wife Elisabeth Stahl, née Burger. Ulf Stahl did his Matura at the Realgymnasium in Eisenstadt in Burgenland. He originally wanted to study mechanical engineering, but in the final year of school he was so enthusiastic about the chemistry lessons at school that were combined with an internship that he thought that one could combine these two interests in process engineering . Therefore, he decided to study for engineer degree of fermentation technology and food technology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences . During his studies, Stahl worked as a student assistant at the test station for fermentation trade of the Association of Austrian Breweries .
From May 1971 he had a doctoral position as a research assistant at the Botanical Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum with the mushroom geneticist Karl Esser , where he received his dissertation in 1975 with a study on the genetic regulation of fruiting body formation in higher Basidiomycetes . In 1981 he completed his habilitation, also with Esser, on molecular genetics of the sac fungus and then received a C3 professorship in Bochum in 1982/83 on the morphology of fungi.
In 1983 he received a C4 professorship at the Chair of Microbiology in Faculty 13 (Food Technology) at the TUB as the successor to Siegfried Windisch (1913-2000). In 1991 this department was merged with the department for process engineering and technical environmental protection at the HUB . From 2005 to 2009, Stahl was dean of the resulting Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology / Process Science at the TU.
In 1984 the President of the VLSF Otto Bittelmann appointed him head of the Research Institute for Microbiology at the IfGB, which is maintained by the VLSF .
From 1995 there was a joint research project on marine algae together with a Korean research institute that had set up a branch at the TU Berlin. Through this collaboration, Stahl also began a visiting and honorary professor at Dongseo University in Busan , which he has continued since his retirement in 2012.
Company formation and other activities
Stahl was a member of numerous scientific advisory boards as well as many domestic and foreign commissions, including the advisory board at the Innovation Center for Technologies for Health and Nutrition (IGE). In addition, he was involved in the establishment of the Biotechnology Center at the TU Berlin and the Biotechnologieverbund Berlin-Brandenburg eV and in 2005 in the establishment of the Biotechnology Association of the DECHEMA Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology eV , where he temporarily chaired the working committee for food biotechnology .
In 1990 he founded the diagnostics company Biotecon Diagnostics together with his doctoral student Kornelia Berghof-Jäger . In 2001 Christine Lang founded Organobalance GmbH , in which he participated. Among other things, this company developed probiotics from one of the world's largest strain collections , which Lactobacillus strains use for skin care, against tooth decay or to combat the stomach germ Helicobacter pylori . At the end of 2016, the GmbH was sold to Novozymes and Organobalance Medical AG , founded in 2010, was renamed Belano Medical AG .
After the VLSF was taken over by the VLB in 2002, there was only a very makeshift continuation of the teaching operations for distillers and the IfGB's experimental liquor factory until 2009. In 2005, Stahl and the qualified hotelier Gerald Schroff took over the Adler Spirituosen brand and the Adler Gin and Adler Vodka developed by Max Delbrück were re-manufactured on the basis of the original recipe. From 2009 both took over the Preussische Spirituosen Manufaktur (PSM). In May 2017, the VLB signed a long-term cooperation agreement with Stahl and Schroff in order to improve and secure the training and further education of distillers and distillers. To this end, a PSM distillery is to be set up again. The building of the old malt house, in which the PSM is housed, was named Ulf Stahl Biotechnology Center Berlin .
Awards
- In 1980 Stahl received the Sandoz Foundation's Graduate Scholarship for Therapeutic Research.
- On October 16, 2017, on the occasion of the opening of the new VLB building, he received the VLB badge of honor in gold.
Memberships
Ulf Stahl was a member of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology , the Association for Genetics , DECHEMA , the Society for Molecular Biology and the Lions Club Berlin-Dahlem.
His function on the supervisory board of Belano Medical AG , one of the two successor companies of Organobalance GmbH , which was co-founded by Stahl , was taken over by the former managing director of the Federal Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry, Henning Fahrenkamp.
