Karl Ferdinand von Langen (born December 12, 1762 in Marburg , † February 13, 1820 in Saarlouis ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the Saarlouis fortress.

Life

His parents were Colonel Johann Ernst Langen (1720–1776) and his wife Charlotte Friederike Philippine Schlatter (* 1732).

Military career

In 1776, Langen was employed as a free corporal in the Hessian service with the “von Mirbach” infantry regiment. He fought in the army of Hessen-Kassel in North America and took part there on September 1, 1777 in the Battle of Brandywine and on October 2, 1777 in the assault on Fort Redbank on the Delaware .

After his return to Europe, Langen resigned in March 1786 and entered Prussian service on August 16, 1786 . Initially employed as a second lieutenant in the free regiment "von Chaumontet", he joined the fusilier battalion "von Schurff" in June 1787. On May 27, 1788, he was transferred to the Fusilier Battalion "von Thadden" of the Lower Silesian Fusilier Brigade as Prime Lieutenant . During the campaign in 1793/95 he was wounded in the assault on Bitche and later fought near Kaiserslautern , Hochheim, Bingen , Limburg and Blieskastel . By 1798 he came to the staff of the later General Field Marshal von Gneisenau . In autumn 1798 he became captain of the fusilier battalion "Putlitz" in Neumark . After the battle near Saalfeld , he was taken prisoner by the French.

During the Wars of Liberation in 1813/15 he was first lieutenant colonel and commander of the 1st Reserve Infantry Regiment , later a colonel and brigadier in the 2nd Army Corps. For his achievements during the Battle of Hagelberg , Langen had received the Iron Cross First Class. On November 20, 1815, as major general, he became the first Prussian commandant of the Saarlouis fortress . He died on February 13, 1820 and was buried in the local cemetery .

family

Langen was married twice. He married on August 2, 1798 with Friederike Juliane Ulrich (born April 22, 1780 in Liegnitz; † August 24, 1800 in Neumarkt). After her death on January 31, 1804 he married Christiane Eleonore, born von Schick (born January 1, 1774 in Siebershausen, † November 6, 1805 in Neumarkt).
