Karl Georg Dümge , also Carl George Dümgé , (born May 23, 1772 in Heidelberg , † February 27, 1845 in Karlsruhe ) was a German historian, librarian and archivist.

Life

Dümge, who started studying at the University of Heidelberg in 1788/89 , completed his habilitation in 1805 with a regional study on the geography and history of the Grand Duchy of Baden , which was published in Heidelberg in 1809 under the title Geographiae et historiae ducatus magni Badensis primae lineae . Despite increasing deafness, he then taught as a private lecturer, in 1811 became assistant librarian at the university library and at the end of the same year an associate professor. In 1813 he failed for the first time with his efforts to obtain a full professorship, but in view of his difficult financial situation was given the post of Heidelberg university archivist, which was paid annually at 100 fl . In 1814 he was transferred to the General State Archives in Karlsruhe as an assessor . His efforts to return to Heidelberg, within the reach of the university library, were initially unsuccessful. Dümge, who was considered a difficult character and was reprimanded by his superiors for poor performance, did not return until 1819 when he was given a leave of absence for the work of the editor of the Society for Older German History , a forerunner of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica , founded by Baron von Stein Heidelberg. But here too there were soon problems again and so in 1822, now as archivist, he finally returned to the General State Archives in Karlsruhe. In addition to other mapping work that he carried out until his retirement (1845), the Regesta Badensia was created here, which, as it is said, “permanently linked the name Dümgé with Baden historical research”.

From 1820 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
