Karl Höffl (born March 3, 1932 in Kisbattyán near Komló , Hungary ; † April 8, 2013 in Freiberg ) was a German engineering scientist and most recently director of the Institute for Mechanical Engineering at the Freiberg Bergakademie from 1991 to 1992 until his retirement .

youth

Höffl attended elementary and middle school in Kisbattyán, moved to Leipzig in 1948 and completed an apprenticeship as a motor vehicle mechanic there in 1951. He then attended the preparatory college at TH Dresden and graduated from high school in 1954.

From 1954 to 1960 studied mechanical engineering in the field of conveyor technology , construction and processing machines at the TH Dresden; there, Franz Kienast promoted him .

Act

After graduating with the grade "very good", he worked as a research engineer, head of department and technical director of the scientific center of the combine construction, building material and ceramic machines Leipzig , where Höffl was significantly involved in the new and further development of construction machinery.

He then moved to Dresden University of Technology in 1965 as a senior assistant at the Institute for Conveying Technology, Construction and Processing Machines headed by Hellmuth Weinrich (1903–1989), where he defended his dissertation on comminution in roller mills in 1969 with the grade summa cum laude . In the same year the Bergakademie Freiberg was appointed to the newly established chair for processing, building material and ceramic machines.

At the Bergakademie, Höffl developed an extensive activity in teaching and research, which was characterized by practical relevance. He dealt with machine systems for preparation and processing processes, ceramic machines, construction and building material machines as well as system planning. He also published numerous teaching letters in the series Machines for preparation and processing . Since 1969 head of the field of mining and processing machines , which was transferred to the mechanical engineering course with specialization in general mechanical engineering as part of the third university reform in the GDR . From 1975 to 1983 Höffl was director of the mechanical and energy technology section of the Freiberg mining academy.

1986 PhD B at the TH Magdeburg as Dr. sc. techn. with the font Shredding and Classifying Machines , which appeared a year earlier as a book that was soon to develop into a standard work.

Höffl also cultivated international contacts intensively. He gave numerous guest lectures such as the Technical University of Miskolc ( Hungary ), AGH Scientific and Technical University in Krakow ( Poland ), Moscow Mining Institute ( USSR ), Technical University of Wroclaw (Poland), Clausthal University of Technology and Jiaotong University of Xi'an ( PR China) ).

In the series of lectures led by Höffl and Besser, Problems of Development and Maintenance in Mining Machine Technology as part of the Mining and Metalworking Day in Freiberg in 1988, Siegfried Bernotat, Fritz Feige, Eberhard Gock , Karl-Eugen Kurrer , Stefan Michaelis u. a. about their research.

In recognition of his services and the theoretical and experimental further development of processing technology , the TU Miskolc honored Höffl in 1989 with the title of Dr. H. c. Finally, Höffl was on the editorial board of the journal Neue Bergbautechnik .

From 1969 to 1992 Höffl successfully led approx. 700 students from Germany and abroad to graduate in the field of extraction and processing technology. He supervised 40 dissertations and participated in 75 doctoral and habilitation procedures as a reviewer. Höffl's collected works include 90 magazine articles, 95 lectures at scientific conferences and congresses, and 30 patents .

From 1990 to 1992 worked in the study reform commission for mechanical engineering of the permanent conference of ministers of education . In 1991 the academic degree Dr. sc. techn. in Dr.-Ing. habil. by the Senate of the TU Magdeburg. From 1991 to 1992 he was director of the Institute for Mechanical Engineering at the Bergakademie Freiberg. Georg Unland followed Höffl's chair in 1993. Since his retirement, Höffl has worked as a scientific and technical consultant for industry.
