Hutfles, who came from Transylvania , came to Kassel via Eschwege after the end of the Second World War . There his first footballing station was Hermannia Kassel . With the blue-whites from the northern part of the city, the "Henschel Club", the two-footed, fast-paced header specialist quickly developed into a top performer on the defensive. After the fourth place in 1951/52 in the 1st amateur league Hessen with the team from Fasanenhof, he moved to KSV Hessen Kassel in the 2nd league south . After a fourth and third place in 1951 and 1952, the former Schalke Rudolf Gellesch came to Hessen Kassel for the 1952/53 season. After five unsuccessful attempts, he was finally promoted to the top: the “Löwen” became runner-up the 2nd league south and rose together with Jahn Regensburg in the upper league. One of the red-whites' outstanding players this season, along with midfield conductor “Gala” Metzner , was Karl Hutfles, who, like Metzner and Erich Knothe, played all 34 league games. Other top performers were Toni Hellwig , Karl Schmidt and Alfred Hosung .

With 0: 4 points, the new league team started the next round in August 1953. The first double point win came in the second home game, on September 6, with a 4-2 win against BC Augsburg in front of 15,000 spectators in the Auestadion . The 1: 5 home defeat against VfB Stuttgart on October 18 was watched by 30,000 spectators. There were also 30,000 spectators in the catch-up game on December 13th against 1. FC Nürnberg (2-2), also on January 17, 1954 in the 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt , before the last home game on March 21, 1954 against fellow promoted Jahn Regensburg, even 32,000 spectators watched the 5-1 victory with three goals by Günter Siebert in the Auestadion. Although the team fought against relegation in the major league, the KSV recorded one of the highest audience averages in Germany with an average of 19,200 visitors in the recently completed Auestadion. The league newcomer achieved relegation with 13th place in the table (23:37 points). Hutfles has played all 30 league games this season and scored one goal.

In the second league year , the Hessians were relegated. In late autumn they had lost the connection after eight defeats in a row. After the first half of the season, the KSV had a point account of 8:22 points and thus held the "red lantern", and at the end of the season, the club finally had to start second-to-last together with Bayern Munich . On May 1, 1955, only 3,000 spectators watched a 1-1 draw against Schwaben Augsburg , the last league game in the Auestadion for a long time. Hutfles was center runner in the World Cup system at the time , Metzner was the right wing runner and Siebert center forward. Also in the second league year Hutfles had completed all 30 league games (1 goal).

Hutfles, who acted as head of defense, remained loyal to Kassel in the second division and played there seven more rounds, up to and including the 1961/62 season. Under coach Willibald Hahn he won the championship in 1961/62 and returned to the Oberliga Süd. In addition to goalkeepers Karl Loweg and Árpád Fazekas , at the side of captain Hutfles were field players such as Hans Alt , Hans Michel , Dieter Vollmer , Jozsef Burjan , Peter Velhorn , Erich Hahn , Klaus-Peter Jendrosch (22 goals), Lothar Kleim and Walter Müller in action.

Before the last year of the old first-class Oberliga Süd, 1962/63, four newcomers came to Northern Hesse with Horst Assmy , Ernst Kuster , Wolfgang Simon and Helmut Zatopek . At the beginning Kassel lost on August 19, 1962 with 0: 1 against the later southern champion Munich 1860 , the team of coach Max Merkel . Stopper Hutfles had Alt and Michel next to them as side runners and thus fought the "lion" storm with Wilfried Kohlars , Rudolf Brunnenmeier and Hans Küppers . He played on the second (1: 3, Schweinfurt 05) and on the fourth match day (0: 5 defeat at FC Bayern Hof) and then moved to the second row after the coach change from Hahn to Walter Müller. Zatopek took over the role of the stopper (he was replaced by Heinrich Dittel from 1963/64 ) and at the end of the round Kassel took tenth place with 29:31 points. After a total of 321 competitive appearances, including 63 league appearances with two goals, Hutfles, who had been active for Hessen Kassel in eleven seasons, ended his career as a contract player in the summer of 1963.

Selection teams

In his first league year, 1953/54, the defensive player from Hessen Kassel took part in a screening course for the German national team of the DFB under the direction of national coach Sepp Herberger in Frankfurt at the end of February 1954 during the current World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Saarland . At the beginning of March he belonged to the 54-man World Cup squad named by the national coach. In the middle runners he was performed together with "Jupp" Posipal , Werner Liebrich , Jochenfritz Meinke and Heinz Wewers . On April 24, he was used in Offenburg in the international match against Switzerland (1: 3) in the B national team. He formed the runner row with Paul Mebus and Jochenfritz Meinke. Unlike teammate “Gala” Metzner, he was not included in the final squad for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland.

In addition to the league games, there were also performances in the cup that can be described as highlights: On May 26, 1957, KSV and defensive boss Hutfles wrestled a 1-1 draw after extra time from later DFB Cup winners FC Bayern Munich in Kassel. In the replay on June 15, Bayern prevailed 3-1. On May 13, 1962, KSV won the home game for the South German Cup 2-0 against SSV Reutlingen and Hutfles eliminated center forward Uli Biesinger .

The city game on May 30, 1959 in the Auestadion against the selection of Berlin around their three-time goalscorer Helmut Faeder (3: 5) went beyond the scope of the league games.
