Karl Klein (born May 27, 1806 in Weisenau ; † November 21, 1870 there) was a Mainz historian and local writer who published mainly on Mainz and the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Life

His father was a civil servant in Mainz, France at the time . He received his education at the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in the city. Klein studied philosophy at the University of Gießen from 1825 to 1829 and then became a tutor at the Mainz high school, where he was permanently employed in 1835. From 1855 he was also a librarian there.

For a long time he was secretary and most recently president of the Mainz Art and Literature Association and co-conductor of the Association for Research into Rhenish Antiquities. Klein wrote numerous articles, mainly epigraphic, historical and critical, in various scientific journals and local newspapers in Mainz. He gave public lectures and took part in advanced training courses for philologists and teachers. Karl Klein presented publications that deal primarily with the history of the city of Mainz , especially with its almost 500-year membership of the Roman Empire (→ Mogontiacum ) and during the French Revolution .

Heinrich Bone described his vita in the program of the high school in Mainz 1870–1871, p. 47 ff.
