Karl Ludwig Roth (philologist, 1790)
Karl Ludwig Roth , von Roth from 1850 , (often also Carl Ludwig Roth ; * May 7, 1790 in Stuttgart ; † July 6, 1868 in Untertürkheim ) was a German pedagogue and classical philologist .
Life
Roth was the son of the Stuttgart high school professor Christoph Friedrich Roth (1751-1830). He graduated from the Stuttgart high school . In 1807 he came to the University of Tübingen and the Tübinger Stift . There he devoted himself to the study of philosophy and theology as well as private studies of philology. In 1812 he completed his university studies. At first he joined his father as an assistant, but on October 7, 1821, he accepted an appointment as professor and rector at the Nuremberg grammar school . He should bring the school back to a better condition. In 1823 he introduced singing and gymnastics lessons at the grammar school, which then brought him some hostility.
Roth became an Ephorus of the Evangelical Seminary in Schöntal in 1843 . After his friend Gustav Schwab encouraged him to apply for the post of rector at the Stuttgart grammar school, he took up this post on May 23, 1850. At the same time he became a member of the higher education authority. Until 1856 he was a member of the study council. He was retired on September 28, 1858.
Roth completed his habilitation in 1859 at the University of Tübingen . As a private lecturer, he taught Roman satirists, Tacitus and Quintilian, on Greco-Roman rhetoric, on Ciceros Partitiones oratoriae and on the rhetoric of Aristotle. In the fall of 1867 he gave up the apprenticeship and retired to his country estate.
