Karl Reininger attended secondary school in Linz and the commercial academy in Leipzig . During his school days in Linz he became a member of the Pennal fraternity Quercus-Markomannia . In Leipzig he was a one-year volunteer in the 3rd Feldjäger Battalion and became a lieutenant in the reserve . As a result, he completed internships in various trading houses in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Antwerp and most recently worked as an accountant at the Stilling & Cahn bank in Frankfurt am Main . From around 1878 Reininger worked as a businessman in Linz, where, after the death of his father in 1888, he also became a partner and managing director of the Franz Honauer sheep's wool factory. In addition, in 1898 he took over the position of vice-president of the stock corporation of the Kleinmünchner cotton spinning and mechanical weaving mills, from 1904 he was its president. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Aktienbrauerei and Malzfabrik Linz.

Reininger worked in the German School Association and was involved in setting up the local groups in Linz, Kleinmünchen, Micheldorf and Rohrbach. He was active in various charitable associations and was involved from 1885 to 1911 as a member of the committee of the Linz Commercial Association. Between 1901 and 1904 he was a vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and from 1905 until his death he was its president. In addition, he was sent to the State Railway Council in 1909. During his tenure as President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among other things, he opened the Pyhrnbahn , for which the Chamber of Commerce had strongly lobbied. Furthermore, under Reininger's aegis, a state craft and industrial exhibition took place in 1909, where, as President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he represented industry and wholesaling more than trade.

As a representative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he was a member of the Upper Austrian Landtag from October 4, 1900 until his death. Reininger also ran for the German People's Party in the 1911 Reichsrat election in the constituency of Upper Austria 1 and was able to prevail in the runoff election against the Social Democratic candidate. In the House of Representatives he belonged to the German National Association , but he was only a member of the Reichsrat for a few days. After he had already campaigned seriously ill, Reininger died during a stay at a spa in Karlovy Vary, where he suffered from pneumonia and died of an intestinal obstruction . His body was buried on August 4, 1911 in Linz.

Although Reininger was a member of the German People's Party, his political ideal is said to have been the German Progressive Party . He has been described as a brilliant public speaker with a keen interest in art, especially literature.
