Karl Schnell

Karl Wilhelm Ernst Schnelle (born August 18, 1831 in Freyburg (Unstrut) , † December 18, 1890 in Grimma ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

The son of a royal domain master, he received his education at the private school in his place of birth. In 1844 he became a student at the Pforta State School , which he left in 1850 to do his military service in Halle (Saale) as a one-year volunteer . There he began to study classical philology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1851 . From 1852 he studied at the University of Bonn . Here he attended the lectures of Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker and Friedrich Ritschl . In Bonn he passed the state examination as a teacher and earned his doctorate in philosophy with the work Exercitationes criticae in Dionysii Halicarnassensis antiquitates Romanas .

In 1854 he became the second teacher of the seminar for learned schools at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin . In 1856 he became an adjunct at the newly opened knight academy in Dom Brandenburg , and in 1858 he was appointed vice-rector at the grammar school in Hamm in Westphalia . From 1874 he was the fourth professor at the Saxon high school St. Afra in Meißen , in 1880 vice rector of the royal high school in Dresden- Neustadt and at Easter 1882 he was employed as rector of the high school in Zittau . On April 23, 1884 he took over the rectorate of the Saxon State School in Grimma and was honored as a knight of the Royal Saxon Order of Merit .

Schnell married Maria Theresa Schreyer in Hamm in 1863, daughter of the pastor in Webau near Weißenfels, Julius Schreyer. There were four children from the marriage, with three children dying in Hamm, Meißen and Dresden.
