Karl Schrader (cartoonist)

Karl Schrader (born August 30, 1915 in Hildesheim , Prov. Hanover , † December 20, 1981 in East Berlin ) was a caricaturist known primarily in the GDR .

Life

After graduating from high school, he attended the arts and crafts school in Hildesheim to become a commercial artist. He later studied at the Graphic Academy in Leipzig . After the outbreak of the Second World War he had to break off his artistic training and go to war as a soldier at the age of 24.

His first series of caricatures appeared on August 4, 1950 in Fresh Wind , the GDR's first satirical magazine . He also published in Eulenspiegel . Schrader illustrated books for adults and for children such as The good pupil Ottokar or So ein Struwwelpeter .

He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Silver and the Art Prize.
