Karl Schubert (musician)

Karl Schubert (born December 10, 1906 in Plauen , † March 7, 2006 in Dresden ) was a German general music director and chief conductor .

Life

Schubert attended the Realgymnasium in Plauen and studied musicology at the University of Munich as well as conducting at the Hochschule für Tonkunst . He also studied at the Liceo musicale Rossini in Bologna and at the Sorbonne in Paris . During his studies in 1928 he became a member of the Rhenania Munich fraternity . In 1930 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

He received his first engagement at the Plauen Theater . He was Kapellmeister in Stendal , Osnabrück and Mainz . In 1937 he became first conductor at the Düsseldorf Opera House , then from 1943 to 1945 at the Wiesbaden State Theater . From 1947 to 1949 he worked as a conductor and lecturer at the Mainz University of Music . Then he was Staatskapellmeister in Dresden until 1953 , where he also taught as a lecturer at the University of Music and Theater . From 1953 to 1958 he was general music director of the Mecklenburg State Orchestra in Schwerin . He then traveled for a few years with guest appearances in Berlin , Hamburg , Erfurt , Gotha , Weimar , Jena as well as in Romania , Bulgaria , Czechoslovakia , Poland , Hungary , Yugoslavia and North Korea . He moved to Dresden in 1962 and became the chief musical director of the State Theaters of Saxony , before becoming chief conductor of the Frankfurt an der Oder Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966 . There he was involved in building the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach concert hall in Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1972 he retired.

He was married to the actress Anneliese Rehse and later to the painter Meta Christians.
