Karl Walk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Gottlieb Karlwalk (born April 20, 1761 in Berlin ; † January 19, 1805 in Leipzig ; pseudonym: Karl Pilger , also Carl ) was a singer, court master and teacher at the Philanthropin in Dessau , professor, court adviser , teacher at a business school in Berlin , Author, song composer and publicist.

Life

Karl Walk was born in Berlin to a family belonging to the Moravian Brethren and grew up there. There he attended the Heckersche Realschule and the Berlin High School for the Gray Monastery . He was interested in philosophy, literature and music. Although he had not received in-depth musical training, he worked in his youth as a concert and church singer in Berlin ( discantist ). Later he sang French operas at the court of Prince Heinrich in Rheinsberg.

He studied theology and philosophy in Halle. The starting point of his philosophical work was Wolffianism , which was dominant at the time, but while still in Halle he turned to sensualism and materialism . From 1784 to 1787 he was a teacher and supervisor at the Philanthropin in Dessau . He summarized his experiences in the text “Some remarks about German schools, especially about the educational institute in Dessau”.

He accompanied the Dessau pupil Baron von Mengden (violin virtuoso) to the University of Halle and Göttingen. Then he became a writer in Halle with a predominantly philosophical focus. He was accepted into the Electoral Mayntzischen Academie of Useful Sciences in 1787 . He accepted a position as professor of philosophy in Giessen, but after hostility and pressure from the theological faculty he had to give up before he took office because of too frank writings. He then lived in the county of Mark in Westphalia and traveled through Germany, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland and parts of Italy as the company of a Westphalian count.

In Neuwied am Rhein, around 1791, he became a professor and finally a councilor to the Prince of Neuwied. After the Prince's death, he moved to Berlin and became co-director of the Dr. Schulzschen Handelsakademie and taught the German language and fine sciences , had to give up after two years for health reasons. In 1793 he founded the Berlin musical newspaper , which he published until 1794.

In 1796 he received his doctorate from the Halle Faculty of Philosophy. A few years later he moved to Dessau and became co-director of the Olivier educational institution and probably accompanied the court theater that was newly built in 1797. In 1796 or 1797 he married Johanna Caroline Wilhelmine Mayer. He took over the editing of the newspaper for the elegant world and therefore moved with his family to Leipzig in October 1800. In 1805 he died after a brief illness, leaving behind his widow with four young children, including Richard Otto Walks . Gerber called Karl Walk “one of the most popular German writers”.
