Father Karl Stadler , born as Paul Stadler (born March 7, 1921 in Rorschacherberg ; † June 17, 2012 in Engelberg ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk and artist who lived and worked in Engelberg Monastery in the canton of Obwalden , Switzerland . He is represented with his paintings, wall paintings and glass windows in churches, monasteries and in public places throughout Switzerland.

Life

Paul Stadler grew up in Rorschacherberg above Lake Constance . In 1934 he entered the Engelberg Abbey School , in 1942 he entered the Benedictine monastery under the monastic name of Karl. He visited after studying theology , the School of Applied Arts Basel (now College of Art and Design ) and taught from 1951 to 1996 at the Collegiate School Engelberg drawing and aesthetics . In his attic studio in Engelberg Abbey, he dedicated himself to the end of his life to art, for which he repeatedly found new inspiration in the Engelberg mountains and on trips abroad.

Father Karl was a versatile designer: his work over seven decades includes watercolors , drawings, wood and linocuts , lithographs , sculptures , glass paintings , wall paintings and photographs . Their public contracts include the cross and the paintings on the coffered ceiling of the mountain chapel Schwand, Engelberg (1951), stained glass and tabernacle in the baptistery of St. Anthony's Church Lucerne (1954), stained glass windows, altar and tabernacle in the St. Anne's Chapel on dem Wädenswiler Berg (1955), relief, glass windows, altar, tabernacle, cross and paintings in the Benedictine convent Maria-Rickenbach (1961, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1974, 1980, 1981, 1987, 1989), wall paintings, glass windows and tabernacle in the former chapel of the Engelberg monastery laundry (today Swiss Sports Middle School) (1962), 24 biblical scenes in stained glass in the Benedictine monastery of St. Andreas , Sarnen (1964), wall paintings and stained glass windows in the church of the Marienburg Benedictine monastery in Wikon (1965), stained glass in the Church of St. Felix and Regula in Wattwil (1968) and the Heiligkreuzkapelle Grafenort (Engelberg) (1971), glass windows in the side chapel of the Franciscan Church in Lucerne (1973), stained glass windows, wall paintings, altar and tabernacle in the chapel of the regional nursing home Bütschwil (1978), stained glass windows and murals in the indoor pool of Stiftsschule Engelberg (1979), murals in the sports complex width in Bütschwil (1980), stained glass windows in the Gothic choir of the Santa Chatrigna chapel in Zuoz (1982), wall paintings in the former prayer room of Schwyz Hospital (1984–1985), stained glass, tabernacle and cross in the house chapel of the «Erlenhaus» nursing home in Engelberg (1987), panel paintings in the village church Ueberstorf (1988), the design of the house chapel of the Maria Hilf mission house in Steinhausen (1989), glass and wall paintings in the chapel of St. Theodul (St. Joder) near Menzberg (1990), wall paintings and tabernacles in Haus Maria Frieden (former AIDS hospice of the Franciscan Sisters ) in Oberharmersbach , Germany (1990), wall paintings in the dining room and in the crypt of the Benedictine convent Maria-Rickenbach (1993, 1997) and stained glass in the baptistery and ceiling paintings in the transept of the St. Antonius sanctuary of the St. Antonius pilgrimage church in Egg ZH (1996–1997).

Father Karl's extensive travels through Greece , Turkey , Italy and France influenced his work. From 1965 to 2004 he was editor of the Titlisgrusses , the quarterly magazine of the Benedictine monastery and the Engelberg collegiate school.

From December 2013 to April 2014 the presented Talmuseum Engelberg with the beauty of simplicity , an exhibition of Father Charles Black and white photograph of the Engelberg mountains and its people.
