Karl Theodor Gravenhorst (also Carl ) (born November 1, 1810 in Braunschweig ; † January 28, 1886 ibid) was a German classical philologist , teacher and translator and a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

biography

As the son of a higher official, Gravenhorst attended the Katharineum and the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. From 1830 he studied ancient languages ​​and history at the universities of Leipzig , Göttingen and Bonn . He then became a teacher or director at high schools in Lüneburg, Göttingen, Hildesheim, Bremen and Braunschweig.

From September 11, 1848 to May 30, 1849, Gravenhorst was a member of the Harburg parliament in the Frankfurt National Assembly and a very active left-wing liberal in the Westendhall faction, which caused him problems in Lüneburg, which he solved in 1849 by being transferred to Hildesheim . From 1857 he worked in Bremen as director of the school for scholars and as an advisor on school reform for the Bremen Senate . In 1866 he was called to Braunschweig to take up the position of director of the Martino-Katharineum, which he held until 1881. In addition, Gravenhorst also worked as a high school supervisor in the school inspectorate.

Gravenhorst was versatile, tolerant and accommodating and had such a great influence on students and colleagues. It made high demands, but at the same time left scope for individual development. On the side he translated Greek tragedies and the Odyssey into contemporary German.
