Karl Wilczynski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Wilczynski (born September 4, 1884 in Grünberg , Silesia , † February 13, 1959 in Mannheim ) was a German writer and journalist .

Life

Wilczynski, who took part in the First World War as an officer, wrote poems around 1915 with titles like "Freiwillige vor!" or "Push on, student!", in which he expressed his generation's enthusiasm for war.

In December 1920 he took over the artistic direction of the "Five o'clock tea of the" Filmbühne "" with the participation of well-known Berlin artists such as Max Adalbert , Fritz Grünbaum and Trude Hesterberg ; Margarete Kupfer performed his “Dirnenlieder”, “powerful in an artfully enhanced effect”.

In the 1920s he was successful as an author of hit texts and started the first German radio cabaret with Klabund .

He also worked early on in film, for example in 1919 as a dramaturge for the silent film "Baccarat" and in 1926 even as an actor alongside stars of cabaret such as Paul Morgan , Wilhelm Bendow and Willy Rosen in the talky-film experiment "The talking film" of the "Phoebus Tonfilm" -Produktions GmbH ”(Berlin).

When the sound film was ready for production around 1930, he also wrote numerous texts for the new genus 'Tonfilmschlager', including songs for two short sound films by Phil Jutzi .

He worked as a lyricist with well-known composers of his time such as Austin Egen, Hermann Krome and Alfred Strasser, also with international composers such as Mario von Aaken, Renato Ugo Raffaelli and Jules Sylvain; An important partner for him was Franz Grothe , with whom he ran a music publisher, the "Edition Franz Grothe", before 1933.

Hitler's " seizure of power " ended his career abruptly. As an artist of Jewish descent, he no longer got a work permit in the “ Reich ”.

Wilczynski emigrated to Paris via Switzerland in 1933 . In 1940 he was interned in the southern French camps of Camp de Gurs and Les Milles and fled to Switzerland in 1942. In the years after the war he continued to work as a writer. He lived in Zurich and Viernheim (LKr. Bergstrasse), where he lived in the house of the writer and publisher SAW (Sammy) Schmitt , whom he had met as a refugee in the French camps. After his death in 1959, the city honored him with an honorary grave for his services to the cultural life of Viernheim (development of the adult education center).

His estate is in the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 of the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main.
