Prince Karl Wilhelm Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt

Karl Wilhelm Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein (born April 23, 1809 in Darmstadt , † March 20, 1877 in Darmstadt) was a prince of Hessen and bei Rhein as well as a general .

Life

Karl was the second son of Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse and from his marriage to Princess Wilhelmine of Baden (1788–1836), daughter of the Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig of Baden . He was brought up together with his older brother Ludwig and went on extensive educational trips through Europe with him.

Karl married on October 22, 1836 in Berlin Princess Elizabeth of Prussia (1815-1885), a niece of King Frederick William III. of Prussia and sister of the later Bavarian Queen Marie .

Karl was the Grand Ducal Hessian General of Infantry and owner of the Grand Ducal 4th Infantry Regiment .

His residence was the Prince Karl Palace (Wilhelminenstrasse 34) in Darmstadt, which is now used by the German Pension Insurance (after several additions and renovations) . Karl von Hessen-Darmstadt is buried in the old mausoleum in Rosenhöhe Park .

politics

Due to the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Prince Karl was a member of the first chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1834 until the electoral reform as a result of the March Revolution in 1849 . After the victory of the reaction , he was again a member of the first chamber from 1856 to 1877. Due to the childlessness of his older brother, Grand Duke Ludwig III of Hesse-Darmstadt , Karl was the next heir to the throne. But there was no succession to the throne because, firstly, Karl a few weeks before Ludwig III. died and because Karl's son Ludwig had previously been appointed heir to the throne, who then officially became the new Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1877.

Note: Through inter-family marriages, Louis IX. Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt and his wife Karoline are two-time great-grandparents of Karl. Through further inter-family marriages the situation arises that the common ancestors Ludwig VIII Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt and his wife Charlotte are four times great-great-grandparents of Charles.
