Karl von Hochmuth ( Russian Карл фон Гохмут / Karl fon Gochmut ; born July 3, 1673 in Kirchberg ; † March 27, 1736 in Riga ) was a German - Russian general and councilor of war .

Life

Karl von Hochmuth studied at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . Without a degree, he served as a soldier in the Saxon ( Dragoon Regiment Birkholz) and Brandenburg armies. He was also a Swedish ship scribe for 34 years . He then became an adjutant and was captured by Sweden in 1702 in the Battle of Klissow . From 1704 he served as a captain in the Russian armed forces . After the Battle of Poltava in 1709 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. From 1712 to 1721 he was then a Russian colonel in a regiment in Sweden and Finland. In 1723 he was promoted to major general by Emperor Peter I and appointed a war council. He was then stationed in Persia. In 1730 he was promoted to lieutenant general and in 1731 to inspector general of the armies on horseback and on foot ( general en chef ). In 1732 he received the Alexander Nevsky Order for his services . From 1734 to 1736 he was the successor of General Peter Wojekow Vice-Governor of Livonia . General Ludolf August von Bismarck followed him .
