history

Beginning as a philanthropist

The gymnasium was in 1780, with the support of the Palatinate Privy Councilor Joseph Fontanesi , by those from Neuchatel in Switzerland originating Louise L'Écuyer , as an educational institution with boarding under the name of philanthropist for Protestant young females established. For this purpose, the city of Frankenthal provided L'Écuyer with a house in Grosse Färbergasse, today Karolinenstrasse, free of charge. The establishment of the school was considered very progressive, as girls rarely received a higher education in the 18th century. In addition, the lessons followed the educational reform principles of philanthropism in the sense of the Enlightenment. In this way, independent thinking and religious tolerance were encouraged at the school. For this reason, Catholic girls were also accepted at the school from 1786.

In 1782 the electoral privileged philanthropist for Protestant young women was recognized as a state institution by the Palatinate Elector Karl Theodor . This is one of the reasons why the Karolinen-Gymnasium is now the oldest state high school for girls in Germany. After the French Revolution , the school had to close in 1799 as the occupied territory fell under French law.

Re-opening as the Karolinen School

After the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine fell to Bavaria after Napoleon's era in 1816 , the reopening of the school was discussed in the city council in 1817 . In September 1818 the Karolinen-Schule was re-established under the direction of Amalie Fränzl's widow André and provided with a sponsorship letter from Queen Karoline , the wife of the first Bavarian King Max Joseph . In 1863 it was renamed the Carolinen Institute with reference to the sponsorship . In 1883 the school opened another new building. A niche has already been built for a planned Carolina statue. This, a sculpture created by the artist Philipp Perron , was installed in 1887.

In 1907 the administration of the school went back to the city of Frankenthal. From 1911 the school was run as a municipal secondary school for girls, from 1917 it was again called the Karolinen School . During the Second World War , the school building was destroyed in a bomb attack in 1943. It was only twelve years later that the school was able to move into its new building at Röntgenplatz, which is still in use today. In the meantime - 1950 - the Karolinen School had become a modern language Progymnasium .

Conversion to high school

In 1968 the conversion into a full-fledged grammar school with nine grades up to the Abitur took place. Three years later, the school was opened to boys for the first time, and since then students of both sexes have attended grammar school.

The school was expanded several times in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1998, the Caroline statue from 1887 could be placed again in the entrance area of the school. In 1999, a bilingual branch of the English student body was set up at the grammar school to further strengthen the focus on foreign languages. From 2000 the focus on mathematics and computer science was also expanded .
