The Kazan tram ( Russian Казанский трамвай Kazansky Tramwaj ) opened on November 20, 1899 and is still in operation today. At its greatest extent, 20 lines belonged to the network, today there are only eight lines. Most lines were closed between 2005 and 2008. The length of the system is 187 km (as of 2009). The track width is 1524 mm. There are two depots in the route network, previously there were three. A total of 161 trams (197 wagons) operate on the routes. The fleet consists mainly of KTM-5 and KTM-8 , as well as the LM-93 and LM-99 models from PTMS . Type RWS-6 are now only five lanes in use. The fare is 10 rubles per trip (as of 2009).

trolleybus

The Kazan trolleybus ( Russian Казанский троллейбус Kazanski Trolleybus ) started work on November 27, 1948 when the first trolleybus line opened in the city . In 1999 there were 14 lines and almost 157 km, the network today consists of 16 lines with a total length of 355 km. 229 buses are available in two depots. In 2008 around 40.8 million passengers traveled in Kazan by trolleybus. This corresponds to a share of 12.7% of the total number of passengers in the metropolis' local public transport.

City bus

By far the largest part of the passenger volume, namely 74%, in Kazan is handled by a network of city buses. The first buses ran within the city in 1925 and were of the Fiat BL18 type. A profound reorganization of the city bus system took place in 2007. Not only was the route changed, but a fundamental overhaul of the vehicle fleet was also decided. All buses have been red since then. In 2008 the fleet comprised 1444 vehicles of various sizes and models. Most of the buses are from Chinese manufacturers, the Belarusian manufacturer MAS , Hyundai, as well as Russian and Ukrainian manufacturers. A trip costs 25  rubles (as of 2017). The 1918 km of bus routes are not only used by a single central company, but are also served by more than 10 different transport companies.

As in any major city, you can also take a taxi in Kazan. There are several taxi companies to choose from.

Intercity bus

There are two major bus stations in Kazan. Until the end of 2009, the city had only one bus station. Since December 28, 2009 there is also the southern bus station in addition to the central one. From there you can take buses to other cities in the republic and many larger cities further away. There is even a connection between Kazan and Baku.

Kazan Metro

railroad

The Kazan Hauptbahnhof (Passagiersky) is located in the center of town. The building, erected in 1896, is an architectural monument in itself. There are 15 different connections to other cities, including Moscow , Yoshkar-Ola , Ulyanovsk and Yekaterinburg . Every year around eight million passengers are handled at the station with its seven platforms. The station can be reached with various bus, trolleybus and tram lines.

There is a second train station in the north of the city, but its future is unclear.

Around the city there is still an Elektritschka , a kind of S-Bahn with 19 stations that connect the outskirts and suburbs with the center. A line is to connect the airport with the city center for the 2013 Universiade in the city.

Others

There is also an inland port in the city, which is suitable for tourists as well as for loading and transporting goods. In summer there are river cruise ships to travel to other Volga metropolises.
