Kaspar Schollenberger , also Caspar Schollenberger (* 1673 in Höchstädt an der Donau ; † August 31, 1735 in Ulm ) was a German clergyman and composer in the southern German music tradition of the Baroque.

Life

Schollnberger devoted his schooling in Augsburg the humanities and the singing in the Benedictine - Imperial Abbey of Monastery Sankt Ulrich and Afra . Augustinus Erath, the then abbot of the Augustinian canon monastery of St. Michael zu den Wengen in Ulm, became aware of him through his choir leadership in Ulm, which is coming to the Teutonic Order . He initially accepted him as a valet and enabled him to do the novitiate and, from October 1697, to study at the Catholic theological university in Dillingen on the Danube .

In 1705 Schollenberger returned to the Wengen Abbey in Ulm and was ordained a priest. He held various offices, initially as a canon . He taught philosophy and theology as a professor ; In 1713 he became dean .

Schollenberger died in Ulm on August 31, 1735.

meaning

Schollenberger's special talent lay in church music , which earned him the title of Excellens Musices Magister ac Chori Praefectus . Several settings by him for masses , magnificats and other sacred works have survived, some of which have come down to us as printed compilations, but also as manuscripts . His compositions are based on the southern German musical tradition of the Baroque. In vocal works, Schollenberger provided for an alternation of tutti and solo movements, whereby he attached importance to arioso voice leading. Often Schollnberger set the type of currency Arie one in which the orchestra sets the beginning of the aria as a motto. It is a rather rare example from the 18th century that in chorale arrangements the composer, like Schollenberger's “Antiphonarium Romanum”, can be traced through his initials .

Long forgotten, it is thanks to the Ulmer Scherer Ensemble that these works are made accessible to the public again and performed.

In St. Michael zu den Wengen there is a portrait of Schollenberger in the typical habit of the Augustinian canons.
