Kaspar Willi OSB (born February 2, 1823 in Domat / Ems , † April 17, 1879 in Chur ) was a Roman Catholic bishop of the diocese of Chur .

Life

The son of Jakob Willi and Anna Maria Cathrina Fetz was baptized in the name of Balthasar Anton. After primary school he attended high school in Chur, in Freiburg im Üechtland and passed his Abitur in Einsiedeln . He then entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Abbey in Einsiedeln and was given the religious name Kaspar. Kaspar Willi made his perpetual profession on May 1, 1845 before Cölestin Müller (1772–1846), the abbot of Einsiedeln Abbey . After studying philosophy and theology he received in the June 11, 1848 hermit collegiate church "Maria Hilf" the priesthood . He taught at the collegiate school and became prefect there on September 23, 1849. On October 9, 1853, he took over the parish of Einsiedeln, was district school inspector, education councilor and built the poor hospital and hospital in Einsiedeln.

At the urging of the Apostolic Nuncio and in support of Bishop Nikolaus Franz Florentini , Pope Pius IX appointed. on December 21, 1868 Kaspar Willi as auxiliary bishop in Chur and at the same time titular bishop of Antipatris . The episcopal ordination donated to him in the collegiate church "Maria Hilf" in Einsiedeln, the bishop of Basel , Jean Claude Eugène Lachat .

Bishop Florentini appointed him his vicar general and sent him to Rome as his representative to the First Vatican Council (1869–1870). There he belonged to the majority for the definition of papal infallibility . The Episcopus auxiliaris took care of the next generation of priests and had new church buildings built.

On January 10, 1877, the Chur cathedral chapter unanimously elected auxiliary bishop Kaspar Willi to succeed Nikolaus Franz Florentini, who had resigned himself on November 25, 1876, as bishop of Chur. This choice was confirmed by Pope Pius IX. on March 12, 1877 and April 1, the solemn enthronement took place in the Assumption Cathedral in Chur.

A year later, Bishop Kaspar Willi fell ill with liver cirrhosis and died on April 17, 1879, he was buried in the cemetery next to the cathedral.
