Kathleen Emperatriz "Kat" DeLuna (born November 17, 1987 in Bronx , New York ) is an American R&B and dancehall singer with Dominican roots.

biography

DeLuna spent her childhood in the Dominican Republic . Her music idol Aretha Franklin inspired her to music. At the age of twelve she was invited by the "Queen of Merengue" Milly Quezada to sing with her in front of thousands of people. In high school, she joined the Ququette R&B and hip-hop group . Her dream wasn't to be a member of a band, but to work as a solo artist in showbiz. Then DeLuna left the band at some point. In order to achieve her dream, she went to a karaoke competition at the age of 15, where she sang the song I Will Always Love You by singer Whitney Houston and won the competition. So she was able to sign a record deal with the Epic Records label .

She made her debut on August 7, 2007 with her album 9 Lives , which was produced by the Swedish producer RedOne and the American singer Akon . Her international breakthrough came with the hit single Whine Up (feat. Elephant Man ), which reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and also entered various other charts. The song became the official theme melody of a major WWE event called SummerSlam . Her idiosyncratic version of the American national anthem at a football game in September 2008 was booed by the audience and described in retrospect as one of the most embarrassing versions of the anthem. In 2009 her second album was due to appear, entitled Inside Out , but the release was postponed for a year. The first single was supposed to be Unstoppable , but because the title from the soundtrack to Confessions of a Shopaholic was released, the song Dance Bailalo was chosen instead , which is not on the album itself.

At the Flemish TMF Awards , she won an award each in the categories Best Urban and Best New Artist . She can be heard in the official remix of Akon's song Right Now (Na Na Na) , which can be heard on her Myspace profile. With the Swedish pop singer Darin she recorded the single Breathing Your Love , which was released on October 16, 2008 and landed at number 2 in the Swedish charts. In 2009 she moved to the Universal Music Group .

In 2013 she recorded the song Always On My Mind with the Romanian producer Costi . This song was a hit in the Balkans in 2011, albeit in Bulgarian with the title Kak ti stoi . The song was sung for the first time by the Bulgarian singer Preslava.
