Katharina von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (* 1518 in Wolfenbüttel ; † May 16, 1574 in Crossen ) was a princess of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and, by marriage, Margravine of Brandenburg-Küstrin .

Life

Katharina was a daughter of Duke Heinrich II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1489–1568) from his first marriage to Maria (1496–1541), daughter of Count Heinrich of Württemberg .

She married Margrave Johann von Brandenburg-Küstrin (1513–1571) in Wolfenbüttel on November 11, 1537 and thus became sister-in-law of the Brandenburg Elector. In the margraviate, Katharina played a key role in the implementation of the Reformation .

Katharina was regarded as extremely economical and economical, with which she actively supported her husband. She owned several farm buildings and a kitchen garden in Küstrin . In the suburb of Küstrins she owned the so-called "wild yard", as well as other goods in Schaumburg, Drewitz and her favorite place Neudamm , a gift from her husband. Katharina settled Dutch religious refugees in Neudamm , who revived the cloth making trade. School and church were built and Neudamm was elevated to town status in 1562.

Katharina, who was described as very popular, was known to the population as "Mother Käthe". She founded the first pharmacy in Drossen and built another one in Küstrin, from which she supplied the poor and needy with medicines free of charge. Katharina set up numerous farms and dairies that she managed herself and also sold the income herself.

The grave of Katharina was discovered in 1999 by Szczecin archaeologists in the ruins of the Küstriner parish church.
