The Kathog tradition ( Tib . : ka thog ) is a sub- school of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and is one of the oldest traditions of the same. The Kathog Monastery is located in Baiyü (Pelyül) County of the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous District in Sichuan . Along with Pelyül , Dzogchen , Shechen , Mindrölling and Dorje Drag, it is one of the so-called "Six Big Seating" of the Nyingma and is also regarded as the starting point for all great Nyingma traditions in Tibet due to its age and importance.
Kathog parent monastery
The parent monastery Kathog Dorjeden (tib .: ka thog rdo rje gdan ) was founded in 1159 by Kadampa Desheg ( tib .: ka dam pa bde gshegs ; 1122–1192). Along with Samye Monastery, it is probably one of the oldest surviving Tibetan monasteries. After the founding, the great Dzogchen master Vairocana visited the Kathog Monastery during his stay in Gyarong . He had a stupa built near the monastery . Already the fifth holder of the throne from Kathog had over a hundred monasteries built and spread the tradition.
The Kathog Monastery is famous for its five-story temple, which is the "glorious copper-colored palace" of Padmasambhava , the actual originator of the Nyingma tradition.
to teach
Among the tantric transmissions of Kathog monastery include teachings of the three "inner" Tantra (Mahayoga, Anuyoga and Atiyoga ), but also Coe - and phowa TEACHING be transferred. Later, the spiritual richness of the tradition was expanded through the Terma practices of Ratna Lingpa .
Throne holders and masters from the Kathog tradition
Lhoga Rinpoche is currently the 84th holder of the throne of Kathog. Of the 300 monasteries that emerged from the Kathog monastery, a large number were destroyed after the uprising of 1959 and during the Cultural Revolution , but 130 monasteries in China, Bhutan, India, Sikkim and Mongolia still exist today. The monasteries that originated from the parent monastery of Kathog have produced many Buddhist masters up to the present day, including Chatral Rinpoche and the masters Chagdud Trülku and Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, who are known in the West . The relatively young master Kathog Trülku also comes from this tradition and currently lives in Norway.
