Radoslav Katičić

Radoslav Katičić (born July 3, 1930 in Zagreb ; † August 10, 2019 in Vienna ) was a Croatian linguist and cultural historian . In Croatia he was regarded as a “polyhistor” and representative of a “multidisciplinary philology” as well as one of the most important authorities on questions of the Croatian language and cultural history .

Career

Katičić studied at the University of Zagreb and received her doctorate there in 1959 with a thesis on Indo-European verbal inflection. In addition to Indo-European studies , he worked a. a. with classical philology , general linguistics, Indology and the history of the Croatian language. From 1972 Katičić was a full professor at the University of Zagreb. On July 21, 1977, he took up his post as a full professor for Slavic Philology at the University of Vienna , succeeding Josip Hamm ; He retired there in 1998.

Katičić was a full member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of several European Academies ( Hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti , Akademija nauka i umjetnosti of Bosnia and Herzegovina , Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi , Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , Academia Europaea ).

Katičić's scientific achievements can be divided into five areas:

  • General Linguistics and studies of the ancient language levels in the Balkans, mainly on the methodological approach of transformational grammar based
  • Linguistic-stylistic work on certain aspects of various European and non-European languages
  • Numerous works on the history of the Croatian language from the beginning of the written form in Croatian Church Slavonic to the vernacular works of Renaissance writers such as Marin Držić or Marko Marulić to the syntax of the modern Croatian standard language
  • Synthetic works that analyze the beginnings of Croatian civilization with a multidisciplinary approach with the help of philology, archeology , culturology, palaeography and textual criticism
  • Reconstruction of ancient Slavic sacred poetry and the pre-Christian beliefs of Slavic-speaking peoples (five books with the subtitle 'Tragovima svetih pjesama naše pretkršćanske starine' (Following the traces of sacred songs from our pre-Christian prehistoric times))

Some aspects of his work met with criticism, most notably his purist approach to linguistic terminology, the primordialist view of nation and subjectivity in articles on language politics . In addition, his work on syntax was judged negatively by other Croatian syntacticians.
