The Katrin is a mountain in Upper Austria near Bad Ischl . The mountain belongs to the Kater Mountains in the Gamsfeld group of the Salzkammergut Mountains and is 1542 m high.

From Bad Ischl (474 m) to the Katrin-Alm, a gondola lift takes you to around 1,415 m above sea level in just 15 minutes. The Katrin cable car is a 4-person single-cable gondola with an inclined length of approx. 2,490 m. The drive is located in the mountain station. The cable car to Mount Katrin was opened in 1959, rebuilt between 1976 and 1978 and underwent extensive electrotechnical modernization in 2009. Until 2010, ski slopes with a length of 6 km were available in winter. In 1962 the Austrian Alpine Ski Championships were held here. From 2011 to 2014 the cable car was only open in the summer months. Since the 2014/2015 winter season, the Katrin cable car has been in operation every weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of March.

The history of the Katrin cable car

Valley station of the Katrin cable car

On August 17, 1910, the Franz Josephs Kreuz, which was erected in honor of the 80th birthday of his majesty Emperor Franz Joseph I , was inaugurated on the Elferkogel in the presence of around 500 spectators by the spiritual council beneficiary Franz Fuchs.

In the summer of 1934, the Emperor Franz Joseph's Cross was painted with anti-rust paint by master painter Josef Neureiter.

In 1955 the founding committee of the Katrin-Seilbahn AG was brought into being and the following year the first meeting was held. The following people were involved in the idea of building a cable car on the Katrin: Adelsmayr Franz (travel agency owner), Brandhuber Karl (inn owner), Heinke Otto (engineer), Lechner Franz (district councilor, retired municipal office manager), Müllegger Franz (Mayor), Nahmer Josef (President of the Tourist Association), Medical Council. Dr. Eduard Prochaska (head of the spa facilities), Zeppetzauer Josef (deputy mayor)

In 1957 the material ropeway, the route and the cable car were built. Within six months, over 1,000 tons of building material were transported with this material ropeway.

For the opening and church consecration of the new orbit to the Katrin, all prominent people from Upper Austria met in 1959. The guests were received in the entrance hall by the saltworks band. The church consecration of the valley station and the cable car was carried out by Abbot Kolomann Holzinger. With the assistance of Pastor Franz Mayr, the abbot said a blessing prayer for God's protection for the users of the cable car. After the official opening by the Section Council Dr. Gatscha drove the prominent guests to the mountain station and inspected the existing facilities there.

In 1960 the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Kreuz was fitted with incandescent lamps and shines every day in good weather. A new path was also created - the "Fahrner-Rössler-Steig" in serpentines from the mountain station to the cross.

At the end of November the sunshine recorder was installed on the mountain station of the Katrin cable car. In the following January 1964 no less than 178 hours of sunshine could be registered there.

In May 1964, the construction of a one-man circulating lift with 75 chairs and the transport capacity of 420 people per hour began. This went into operation on December 15, 1964. The route of the chairlift ran to the left of the ski run, which, thanks to its north-facing location, favored runs until spring.

After the cable car was shut down on January 25, 1976 after 20 years of operation, few optimists believed that it would ever go back into operation. However, the tough negotiations and incessant preliminary talks with the state and federal government meant that the state of Upper Austria agreed to provide the necessary funds for the rehabilitation of the railway and to pay off the private shareholders. After that, nothing stood in the way of the municipality taking over the cable car.

In 1978 the cable car was able to be rebuilt in just seven months and the cable car was able to go into operation before Christmas. The new cable car system now has 29 supports and 46 four-person gondolas. The circulating rope is stretched at tree height throughout and you feel safe on the ground. The official opening ceremony was planned for the coming spring.

Numerous representatives of the Province of Upper Austria were again invited to the official opening ceremony in 1979. After the greeting by Mayor Karl Saller and the keynote address by Governor Dr. Josef Ratzenböck, the church was blessed by the pastor Oberlinninger and vicar Liebrich.

In October 2019, a confessional gondola was inaugurated by Linz diocesan bishop Manfred Scheuer , which regularly gives the opportunity to talk to a pastor during the quarter-hour journey .

The "Katrinberglauf" has been taking place annually since 1995 and leads from the valley station to the mountain station of the Katrin cable car. The start is at an altitude of 474 m, the finish line at an altitude of 1,415 m. With a length of 4,500 m, the participants have to cope with an altitude difference of 943 m. The course record is held by the six-time mountain running world champion Jonathan Wyatt ( New Zealand ), who covered the course in 31:14 minutes in 2006.
