The Kea Trader was a full container ship built in 2017 at the Chinese Guangzhou Wenchong shipyard , which was abandoned in the same year after an accident and declared a total loss.

description

The ship was built as the fourth of six identical container ships for the shipping company Lomar Shipping and was delivered by the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in January 2017.

The ship with five holds was built as a full container ship with cell guides . The holds were closed with pontoon hatch covers. A breakwater was located between the forecastle and hatch 1 to protect against overflowing water. The ship was equipped with three cranes for cargo handling, which were arranged amidships between hatches 1 and 2, 3 and 4 as well as 4 and 5 and each could lift 45 t. The superstructure was far aft.

The ship could load 2,194  TEU . There was space for 894 TEU in the holds and 1,300 TEU on deck. When loaded with 40-foot containers, there was space in the holds for 432 FEU and 30 TEU and on deck for 638 FEU and 24 TEU. There was space for twelve containers side by side on deck. The containers could be stacked up to five layers on top of each other on deck. With a homogeneous loading of 14 t containers, the ship's capacity was 1,570 TEU. The maximum weight of a container stack in the room was 144 t for 20-foot containers and 180 t for 40-foot containers, and on deck 60 t for 20-foot containers and 90 t for 40-foot containers. 490 connections were available for refrigerated containers (268 in the room and 222 on deck).

Average and recovery

On the night of July 11th to 12th 2017, the ship ran aground on the Durand Reef en route from Papeete ( French Polynesia ) to Noumea in Maré (New Caledonia) . The ship, which Lomar Shipping bereedert was, went in charter of the Dutch shipping company Seatrade. At the end of August 2017, the crew was evacuated, and most of the loaded containers were recovered. In October 2017, the ship, which was still lying aground, was declared a total loss and should be scrapped after it had been salvaged.

The contract for securing the wreck and the recovery of the cargo and bunker on board was awarded to the company Ardent Maritime together with the contract for recovering the wreck . A first rescue attempt on October 9, 2017 failed. It was only possible to turn the ship 50 degrees. Due to unsuccessful attempts at free towing, the ship should be completely unloaded before it should be salvaged in mid-November. On November 12, 2017, the ship broke apart.

During the rescue, the containers were first divided into three and recovered with helicopters. By the cyclone Gita bow and stern driven further apart, while the stern sank further in the water. The cyclone Hola in March 2018 further damaged the ship.

In March 2018, the contract for the salvage of the wreck was awarded to the Chinese salvage company Shanghai Salvage Co.
