Keith Carlock

Keith Carlock (* 29. November 1971 in Greenville , Mississippi ) is an American jazz - and fusion - drummer , who, among other things through his work with Sting and Steely Dan has excelled.

Life

Carlock grew up in Clinton in the greater Jackson (Mississippi) and began at a young age with the drumming. He studied jazz drums for four years at the University of North Texas with George Lawrence and Ed Soph, among others . With him he learned the Moeller technique, which he said fundamentally changed his drumming.

After working for a few years as a studio and live musician in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area , he shifted his professional focus with a move to New York in 1996. Since then he has established himself as a permanent fixture in the American music world, including with Sting , James Taylor , John Mayer , Steely Dan (since 1997), Diana Ross , The Blues Brothers , David Johansen , Grover Washington, Jr. , Clay Aiken , Oz Noy , Larry Carlton , Harry Belafonte . In 2014 he replaced longtime drummer Simon Phillips at Toto for the recording of the album Toto XIV . He left Toto after the North American tour in spring 2014.

Carlock lives in New York and Nashville with his wife and two children . In 2009 he released an instructional video DVD called The Big Picture: Phrasing, Improvisation, Style, and Technique. In the same year, he was voted best drummer in the Fusion and Pop categories in a Modern Drummer poll.
