The Celtic-Roman Museum in Manching , Upper Bavaria , around ten kilometers southeast of Ingolstadt , is a branch museum of the Munich State Archaeological Collection . The museum opened on June 2, 2006.

Sponsorship and building

The museum is supported by a special purpose association; Members are the market town of Manching, the district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm , the district of Upper Bavaria and the Celtic-Roman Circle of Friends.

The building was designed by the Fischer Architects Munich office and awarded by the Association of German Architects . It is divided into the largest room with 670 m² for the “ Celts Department ” and the “ Roman Exhibition ” with 510 m².

Celts

The finds and exhibits of the Oppidum von Manching in the immediate vicinity are exhibited here. Of particular importance is a gold treasure discovered in 1999, consisting of 450 gold coins ( shell staters ). It is the largest Celtic gold find discovered in the 20th century.

The so-called cult tree found in 1984 is unique worldwide , the gold-plated image of a branch from the 3rd century BC entwined with leaves, buds and fruits. Chr.

Romans

Roman military ships

The center of the section form two 15 meter long Roman military ships from about 100 n. Chr. The wrecks were in a 1986 silted branch of the Danube in Manchinger district upper Timm , the Brautlach been discovered. It was not until 1994 that they were salvaged according to plan and then restored and conserved in the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz .

There is also a model of the large Danube bridge near Stepperg as well as other finds from Roman times, especially from the area around Manching.
