Kemal Karpat
Kemal Haşim Karpat (born February 15, 1925 in Babadag , Romania ; † February 20, 2019 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was a Turkish historian with a focus on the Ottoman Empire . He was one of the most prominent scientists in his field in Turkey.
Life
Karpat was born in Romania in 1925 to Turkish parents. He studied law at the University of Istanbul ( LL.B. , 1947) and political science at the University of Washington (MA). A Ph.D. He graduated in Political and Social Sciences from New York University in 1957 .
He then worked for the United Nations Economic and Social Council . He taught u. a. at New York University, Montana State University - Bozeman , of Princeton University , the Bilkent University , the Technical University of the Middle East , the University of Ankara , the Harvard University , the Johns Hopkins University , the Columbia University , the Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and the University of Washington . He has also worked for the Turkish Studies Association and the Turkish Research Institution.
From 1970 he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he edited the International Journal of Turkish Studies , coordinated the Central Asian Studies Program and headed the Middle Eastern Studies Department. He also founded the Central Asian Studies Society.
He later worked as a professor of history at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi . He has published numerous books, translated into more than 20 languages. He died in February 2019, five days after turning 94.
