Kenneth "Ken" Strong (born May 9, 1963 in Toronto ) is a former Canadian - Austrian ice hockey player and current coach.
Player career
Ken Strong started his career in the Central Ontario Junior Hockey League (COJHL), where he scored 45 scorer points in 36 appearances for the Streetsville Derbys club . From 1980 he was for the club Peterborough Petes in the Canadian top junior league OHL on the ice and came in three seasons on 181 missions, where he reached 91 goals and 120 assists . His son Steven is also a hockey player.
In 1981, he was from the Philadelphia Flyers for the highest professional league NHL drafted , however, the already 1982 Toronto Maple Leafs issued. For the Maple Leafs, he came to 15 appearances in the NHL and achieved two goals and two assists. In addition, he came to 166 missions for the American Hockey League (AHL) playing farm team of the Maple Leafs, the St. Catharines Saints . With the team he was 1985/86 in the division finals of the Calder Cup , but they were lost to the Hershey Bears 3: 4. In the 1986/87 season he reached the division finals again with the previous year's winner Adirondack Red Wings , in which the Wings were eliminated 1: 4 against the Canadiens de Sherbrooke .
After Strong had already played 15 times in the National League A (NLA) for the Swiss club EHC Chur in 1986/87 , he finally moved to Europe in 1987 and first came to three appearances for the Swiss B-League club (NLB) HC Martigny .
During the 1987/88 season he was appointed as a replacement for Cam Plante in the squad of the Carinthian club EC VSV in the Austrian ice hockey league . There he developed into a crowd favorite due to his physical style of play and his goalscoring results. In 347 missions he scored 311 goals and scored 329 assists. With the VSV he was twice Austrian champion and twice runner-up. In addition, third place in the Alpine League was achieved twice . In the eternal VSV goalscorer list, he is third behind Peter Raffl and Wolfgang Kromp . In Carinthia he also met his future wife, with whom he gave birth to son Steven in 1993 in Villach .
After Strong was granted Austrian citizenship, he also played on the national team . By winning the B World Championship in 1992 , in which Strong scored four goals and four assists, Austria managed to return to the A class after 33 years. Strong also played at the 1994 Winter Olympics , where he contributed three goals and one assist.
He ended his playing career after the 1996/97 season with the Kapfenberg team .
Coaching career
After his active career, he founded the Hockey Academy “Strong Hockey” near Toronto and has dedicated himself to training talent of all ages. In 2012/13 he acted as trainer for the farm team of EC Red Bull Salzburg and assistant trainer for the combat team.
Between December 2018 and March 2019 he was assistant trainer of the VSV fighting team.
