Do you know the country ... A political revue is a documentary film made in 1979 by the DEFA studio for documentaries .

action

Embedded in the opening and closing pictures, which show optically attractive aerial photographs of landscapes and buildings in the GDR and which are intended to make them experienceable as home, are mainly excerpts from old newsreels, feature films and television films, in which essential moments and events of far-reaching social changes and historical upheavals are recorded become. In other words, excerpts from such early DEFA films as Grube Morgenrot , Our Daily Bread and Castles and Katen and TV productions such as Weg über Land , Die Aula and Krupp and Krause , and this material also gains a documentary quality in such a combination. Several film excerpts can also be seen, the actions of which predate the founding of the GDR ( The Invincible , Stronger Than the Night , The Subject and Mother Krausen's Journey to Luck ). Documentary archive material and animated film sequences can also be seen. These excerpts speak for themselves, they do not need to be explained, and a comment has therefore been completely dispensed with. The compilations, which do not aim at the totality of the events and not at a completely continuous chronology, are supplemented by songs based on texts by Bertolt Brecht , Wolfgang Langhoff and Gerd Kern. The musical accompaniment comes from the Lift group . The connection between the individual sections is created by performances by the singers and actors Sabine Fehse, Ruth Hohmann, Rolf Ludwig and Wolfgang Protze.

production

Do you know the country ... A political revue was filmed by the artistic working group "futurum" under the working title "Rote Revue" on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the GDR on ORWO- Color and had its premiere on June 2, 1979 in the Berlin cinema . It was first broadcast on GDR television on October 19, 1979 in the second program.

criticism

Horst Knietzsch said in Neues Deutschland that this film is an entertaining invitation to the viewer to reflect on an extraordinary chapter of German history and not just experience it retrospectively.

The lexicon of international films is of the opinion that the film questions little and avoids conflicting substances.
