István Oláh

István Oláh (born December 16, 1926 in Nádudvar , Hajdú-Bihar county , † December 15, 1985 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian army general and politician of the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who, among other things, was Minister for National Defense between 1984 and his death in 1985.

Life

Oláh first worked in his father's factory and then as a shoemaker's journeyman , before he began studying teaching at the Református Kollégium in Debrecen in 1947 . However, this he dropped out after the fall of 1947 training as an officer at the military academy of the army Lajos Kossuth began, which he called 1949 lieutenant graduated. In 1945 he joined the Communist Party KMP (Kommunisták Magyarországi Pártja) and in 1948 the Party of Hungarian Working People MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) . After assignments within the army, he graduated from the Military Academy (Honvéd Akadémia) between 1952 and 1954 and was then first deputy commander and from November 1955 to 1957 commander of the training battalion Franz II. Rákóczi .

After further training at the military school Máté Zalka , Oláh was promoted to commander of a division in 1958 and in 1959 to colonel (Ezredes) . After completing a training course at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR in 1964, he initially acted as deputy head from 1964 to 1966 and then from September 8, 1966 to January 9, 1973 as head of the training department of the Hungarian People's Army (Magyar Néphadsereg) . At the same time he was promoted to major general in September 1966 .

On January 9, 1973, Oláh was appointed as the successor to Colonel General Károly Csémi as Chief of the General Staff of the People's Army and was also promoted to Lieutenant General (Vezérőrnagy) . He held the post of Chief of Staff until December 6, 1984 and was held on March 22, 1975 at the XI. Party Congress also elected a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the MSZMP, to which he belonged until his death. At the same time, due to his function as Chief of the General Staff, he was also a member of the Committee for National Defense (Honvédelmi Bizottság) .

In 1980 he was promoted to Colonel General (Vezérezredes) and between 1982 and his death he also held the position of Vice-President of the Alliance of Hungarian Resistance Fighters and Antifascists (Magyar Ellenállók és Antifasiszták Szövetsége) .

After a reshuffle of the cabinet of Prime Minister György Lázár , he became Minister for National Defense (Honvédelmi Miniszter) on December 6, 1984, successor to Army General Lajos Czinege . He also held the post of defense minister until his death on December 15, 1985 and was promoted to army general (Hadseregtábornok) in September 1985 . After his death, Lieutenant General Ferenc Kárpáti became the new Minister for National Defense.
