Kevin Smith (born December 17, 1986 in Miami , Florida ) is a retired American football player on the position of running back . He played for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).

Early years

Kevin Smith attended Southridge High School in Miami , Florida . He was a very good student and also played American football in high school. He did so well that in just three years he was nominated twice for the All- Dade County selection. In his time as a junior he ran 1125 yards of space and scored 15 touchdowns .

college

Kevin Smith moved to the University of Central Florida after high school . Also on the College Smith played on strong and scored in three years he played for the University team that Knights, 4864 yards on 905 attempts, which constitutes an average space gain of 5.37 yards per attempt. He scored 45 touchdowns. Smith was used in 34 of a total of 36 games during this time.

His 4864 yards are the second highest in Conference USA history . During his junior years, Smith made 450 runs, with this number he undercut the record set by Marcus Allen in 1981 with 405 runs. The 2566 yards he had run during that time almost meant the record in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season Rushing set by Barry Sanders in 1988 . In the end, he was only 62 yards short of gain in space to break the existing record of 2,628 yards in Barry Sanders' NCAA.

In his final season, he was seen by many as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy winner . At the end of the season, however, he only finished 8th with 55 points and three votes, which directly voted him the Heisman Trophy winner. This result, however, was the second-best result in the history of the UCF, because Smith was only the second player who could unite the votes for the direct election for the award with the Heisman Trophy at all in the history of the college. Only Daunte Culpepper , who is now his teammate in Detroit , managed to do this .

Draft

On the Pro Day , he ran the 40-yard run in 4.45 and 4.47 seconds. In the vertical jump he reached the height of 33.5 cm and he lifted the weight of 105 kg 15 times. Despite his strong performances during his time in college, he was only considered a potential 3-4 round pick by the experts after the Pro Day. In the 2008 NFL Draft , Kevin Smith was then drafted by the Detroit Lions in the third round in 64th place.

Professional career

Kevin Smith signed a three-year contract with the Lions. Smith played strong in the preseason , which made him a starter. This is particularly noteworthy because a few days before the start of the season the Lions signed the star running back from the Cincinnati Bengals , Rudi Johnson , whom Smith replaced as a starter with a few games. In his first NFL year as a rookie, he achieved a total of 976 yards of space gained in 238 attempts, which makes an average of 4.1 yards per attempt. He scored eight touchdowns.
